I must say though, I can't actually see the cam on the gantries you posted? where about on it?

Lmao if I can't notice it there I would never notice it driving!!

Hah! hopeless!!

It's the box thing behind the big flat screen sign thing - look closely and you'll see it looks a bit like the roadside cameras, bit of a window and stuff. Theres a shining thing associated with it (round pointing thing above and to the side like a short fat telescope). Sorry about the technical terms, can't do it in layman's language I'm afraid.

Nah, technical is stuff like thingymajig and whojimaflip

A dummy's question about the use of SPECS cameras in the variable speed limit section of the M25 (and other motorways):

I would have thought that the use of average speed cameras wouldn't work because if you're travelling from a 70 to a 40 to a 50 to a 60 etc, then your average speed might well be within the average of two sections of different limits although your actual speed within individual sections might be above the speed for that section.

Since the speed limit might conceivably change at each gantry (and therefore each camera), I would have thought that cameras need to be tied in to the speed displayed on the associated gantry.

...but this could be one of those rare occasions when I'm wrong Laughing

I have no evidence to support it, but logic says you're right and there are NO Specs (average speed) cameras in any variable speed limit area. The Specs I mentioned are on the northern part of the M25, where there isn't a variable speed area, just a long distance covered by average speed cameras. Seemingly a new innovation and far more useful than mobile cameras, or indeed, fixed ones like Gatsos, both of which only get you for speeding where the camera is (so you chuck the anchor out in front of the camera, then hair off as soon as it's gone from your rear view mirror). Specs force you to keep your speed down over a long distance. All other Specs are stuck into roadworks with fixed speed limits for the entire length of roadworks.

Sorry, it's not one of those rare occasions when you're wrong.

Is that photo a picture of the actual M25 camera gantries now??

The M25 always had smaller all encompassing camera units, i.e. camera, radar and flash in one unit hidden away at the top of solid gantries. The photo shows a truss like gantry exactly the same as the ones on the M42 where the camera and radar are one unit and the flash is the separate smaller unit (for some reason) above with circular lens.

Andy.

The picture with the cameras is almost certainly from the M42 (same "scaffolding" gantry and matrix board). The gantries shown on the smaller photo from the M25 are more solid. I doubt if they would replace the gantries just to mount new cameras.

The principal behind the two sections are the same though.

No. The camera units are the same but the gantry is different. Probably the M42 as pointed out. Couldn't find an M25 one.... UNTIL NOW!!! Yes here they are in COLOUR...

I thought this was interesting... esp 1 & 3...

Quote:
When a new speed limit is posted, the CMIIS software does the following:
1, Starts a timer for a user-set "grace period", to allow the motorist time to react to the new limit. This is generally set at 5mins.
2, Checks that the posted limit is valid (i.e.. is one of RX, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 or NS)
3, Checks that the optical output from the matrix board is exactly the same as the electrical input. In other words, if even one bulb that makes up the display of the speed has blown on the matrix board, it is invalid and the system will never activate.
4, Performs a whole raft of crosscheck's, internal checks, etc., any of which can invalidate the system and cause it not to enforce. This includes an anti-tamper check on the enclosure.

They are a mathematical anomaly called "Wobbly Rings". It's so technical that if i explained it here the Internet would have to shut down.

My Photoshop skilz pwn (or something....)

I think you'll probably find that the camera signs are alongside the speed limit signs - look at the photos in PaulB2005's post on the previous page.

So, what I am reading into all of the above is that the variable speed cameras on the M25 SW section are always activated????

I have heard it said that they are only active when the reduced speed signs are switched on i.e. they would typically be off when the limit is 70 but the minute the signs come on with say 60 or 50 or whatever they activate.

True or False....................

There must also be some kind of delay on these things, a few years back I approached a camera doing a 'highish' speed only to see the sign illuminate with 50 when I was within 100 yds of it. By the time I had registered the fact it was too late to slow down to 50 and I probably passed under it doing the high 60s - never got a NIP though Laughing
