I've ordered a SatMap from Amazon now (they seemed the cheapest), and it should arrive with me at the beginning of next week. I've also got a Lake District SD map card winging it's way to me.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks etc for using the device for someone who has never used one before?

I plan to use the device on several walks in the Lakes at the beginning of Feb. Will the supplied batteries be ok for a couple days worth of use (e.g. 5 hours per day for two or three days with suitable power saving settings applied), or will it eat more than one set?

Very Happy

If you have the device powered up but using the power save options you should get a couple of days use from a single set of Energizer Lithiums (as supplied with the unit) BUT at the end of your first days walk take the batteries out of the device to prevent them being drained over night. Even with the device switched off there is a constant drain applied to the cells, its only around 35mA but will seriously reduce the usage time of the cells.
I always carry a spare set of cells though just in case, these are as vital as the paper maps and compass when out in the hills - Mike

Cheers, will make sure to take them out.

I just bought a couple of packs of Energiser Ultimate Lithiums from Jessops (which, by the way, are half price at the moment at £4.49 for a pack of 4, which is nice).

Don't ever carry these type of cells loose in your pocket, if they short out accross your keys they will heat up burning your leg (I am talking from experiance here and it wasn't a nice warm feeling) - either keep them in their packet until use or purchase a dedicated battery box, I have a couple for 6 AA cells and a couple of SD cards made by Ansmann see Here - Mike
