"Asc" as shown on Trip Log

Can anyone advise me what how the "Asc" (presumably "ascent") is calculated on the trip log screen.

I went for a walk a couple of weeks ago and the trip log correctly identified that the maximum height reached on the 9 mile walk was around 500 ft but it also claimed that my "Asc" was 3,256ft which surprised me and my colleagues. Now maybe it was logging heights when I was not walking but driving from the parking place to the cafe (with the trip log turned off) but I still cannot see how it got the grand total of 3,256ft.

Any ideas?

I suspect that my unit adds height data to the log when it is locking onto the satellites...as the red dot moves across the screen to your actual location.....
