Talking about a 920.

I don't see any option to change the order in which items play. They can shuffle or repeat but there is not sort by.....

Hmmm, is this going to be a problem with Classical Music - I will have to play a few and test.....

I guess I may need to create playlists?????

Oh, well.

Now that I think about it - where do you place the Playlists? In the top level of the mp3 folder or in with each album? And what addressing scheme is used for the PATH to the various files?

From title of your thread - do you mean you'd locate the music easier if it showed "Track 5" instead of "Romance from the Gadfly by Shostakovich"? Confused

I have to say I'm no expert at this - I only ever once put some CDs onto an SD card for the 720 to play. Got it wrong first attempt, but when I got it right, I then had the choice of artist's album and then track title. Play one piece, or the whole album. Mind you, my Renault has a finger tip control, so I can move to another track so easily.

I've not researched this fully, but I think I remember in iTunes there is an option to rename every track as it is imported to put "Track 01 - " etc in front of the name, and it MIGHT also happen if you use Home to import songs as I've found some named like that on my Go which I didn't do deliberately.

If you do that, then when you go to "Play Album" they will show in track order. You will also have to turn "shuffle" off.
Not much help, I'm afraid, but might give you a clue as to how to fix it.

Can you tell us what you did to get it right, please?

Don't quote me on this, it could all go horribly wrong, because I can't remember!!

First, I put a blank 2GB SD card into my card reader.

Then I put the first CD in the CD drive and started Windows Media Player.

In that, I then had to "RIP" (see top menu) the CD into my LIBRARY.

Then I had to SYNC from library to the SD card.

I ripped all the CDs into the library first, then "dragged" them from library to the sync box at right, then clicked start sync and they all went onto the SD card.

That wasn't my first attempt - first time I just somehow copied the tracks onto the card. It worked, but didn't have them as albums - I just had zillions of tracks. When I did it by ripping the CDs, it somehow came out as albums.

You really shouldn't be asking me this - I don't even know the difference between mp3 and mp4 (or 2 or 1 for that matter, which there'd have to be to get to 3 and 4?).

I have just experimented with my new Katie Melua CD and after they had synced onto the card, I found there were two folders on the card.
1 = MP3
2 = MUSIC
Under the folder called Music were two "albums" (Folders), Katie Melua and Concertgebouw (which I'd forgotten was in the Library).

They wouldn't play on the GO.

So, I renamed the folder MP3 to mp3 (lower case), then dragged the two folders Katie Melua and Concertgebouw out of the Music folder and into the mp3 folder (and deleted the Music folder). They worked - when I put the SD card into the GO, I was able to choose Artist, then whatever.

I'm very pleased with myself!

Oh, and all that took at least ten minutes from start to finish (less time than it's taken to type all this) - my grandson would no doubt have done a dozen CDs in that time (but I did have to change the directories and stuff).

So, Dan, tell her to "rip" all the CDs first, then highlight all of them and drag them in one go into the sync box/column to the right, then "start sync" and they'll all go onto the card, with a folder for each album. They need to finish up as folders inside the folder called mp3 (lower case letters), so if necessary, rename the MP3 folder to lower case and drag the "Albums/Folders" into it (using Windows Explorer).

PS. Thank you for asking the question, Dan. It has resulted in me finding the Nine Million Bicycles track I thought I'd lost - my favourite song of 2007.

First, thanks for the active participation in this thread. It seems most have not sought to use this ability of the units. Ripping was something I learned a few years back when I wanted a cd of my choices - it was still a new an evolving technique.

I will have to check out using HOME and moving/copying music using it but on the 4 gig card as HOME will not function on my newer 8 gig card (actually, Windows Explorer won't either when the card is INSIDE the 920). Maybe Home takes care of adding the track number into the title.

I can, of course, manually change the track's name and add the prefix number but that means RETAGGING hundreds of files!!!! I have tools to do that but it will still be time consuming. I will have to check out that newly discovered Shostakovich piece mentioned above Wink

And I have created a folder structure. Brahms stuff in a folder and each album in subfolders (shows how old I am, I still think about them as DIRECTORIES).

I do like the comment that was generally "Hey, this is a gps, NOT an mp3 player!!!" Fine comment on the merging state of all this tech. Soon my digital camera will also play mp3 files (not, not a cell phone!)

The Playlist format is still something I am researching. And HOME may play a role in that, too?????

Unless I'm mistaken, this will not work.
You simply have one directory - mp3 - in the root of the card. I used Windows Media Player to rip and sync CDs to the card, not TT Home, which is a great NO NO for me.

You end up with one Directory "mp3" with loads of sub-directories called Brahms Disk One, Brahms Disk Two etc, etc (maybe more likely Brahms Best of Brahms, Brahms Best ever Brahms, etc, whatever the real title is on the cover of the CD. As far as I'm aware, "mp3" with "subdirectory Brahms" then subdirectories for each CD goes too far down the structure.

As we used to say in the good old days ...

mp3\BrahmsDiskOne.
mp3\BrahmsDiskTwo. Works fine.

BUT mp3\Brahms\BrahmsDiskone
and mp3\Brahms\BrahmsDisktwo. Doesn't work. At least, it didn't work for me.

But then, I've heard that Shostakovich was not only a brilliant composer, but also a fully qualified football referee. Anybody doesn't know of Shostakovich doesn't deserve a Chopin CD (or to have heard of directories - the only proper way to identify these things).

No, you're mistaken Dennis, unless it is handled differently on old machines.
The whole structure is very similar to the way iTunes does it.
Every "Artist" has a folder, every "Album" has its own sub-folder in the relevant Artist folder.

The contents of my SD card look like this (or DID before it got nicked for my daughter's new camera!):

Artist A
Album X
Song 1
Song 2
Song 3
Album Y
Song 4
Song 5
Song 6

Artist B
Album Z
Song 1
Song 2
Song 3
Album W
Song 4
Song 5
Song 6

etc.

Dennis, as Andy wrote, the directory tree does appear to work.

mp3
mp3/brahms
mp3/brahms/album1
mp3/brahms/album2
mp3/chopin
mp3/chopin/greatest hits (G)
etc

works. At least the files are found and played.

The real issue for me was the play order. It appears to use the internal TITLE tag and not the actual FILENAME or TRACT number to play items.

I guess I could contact TomTom and suggest some additional play order options.

But I will also check out HOME and see if it really pre-pends a Track Number to the title. Of course, that means yet another copy of the various files if I want quick backup/restore. Or I can always just allow home to copy the files.

I just fired up HOME with the 4gig card to start the experiment....

First of all when you use Home, it merely opens an Explorer window and tells you to use drag/drop. So I don't see it doing anything special under Home.

Aha, I think I got it. Play ALBUM and it appears to show stuff in TRACK order and NOT alphabetically.

I still don't understand the Playlist option. How to create them and where they would be located on the device and how to specify the path to find the various files. And that may be because I have created a Folder/Subfolder structure???

(and just for background - I was am a former computer programmer when Cobol was in its heyday!!!) Twisted Evil

I get the following listing if I explore the mp3 directory on the SD card:

All the following are individual folders detailing the artist:

AHA
Bryan Adams
Coldplay - X & Y
depeche mode - rose remixes vol.4
Dire Straits
Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler The Best Of
Eurythmics
Faithless - The Greatest Hits
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better
Glen Miller
Go West
Joss Stone
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Kelly Clarkson - breakaway
KT Tunstall - Eye To The Telescope
Level 42
Madonna
Manic Street Preachers - Lipstick Traces - A Secret History Of
Mariah Carey
New Order
Paul Weller - As Is Now
PINK FLOYD
Robbie Williams
Scissor Sisters
Simple Minds
Stoneage Hearts - Guilty As Sin ( )
Sugababes
Talking Heads
Tears For Fears
Ten Reasons To Live
The Corrs
The human league
Tina Turner
TOTO
U2
Vangelis - Odyssey - The Definitive Collection

Selecting any single folder will display the album names (in this case Level 42):

A physical presence
Forever Now
Guaranteed
The Pursuit of Accidents
World Machine

Selecting "World Machine" produces a list of the individual tracks:

01 -World Machine
02 - Physical Presence
03 - Something about You
04 - Leaving me Now
05 - I sleep on my heart
06 -Its not the same for us
07 -Dream-crazy
08 -Good man in a storm
09 -Coup d'etat
10 - Lying Still

On the actual device I use "Playlist" and the TomTom will ofer a list of artists, selecting one then offers the albums, followed by the tracks contained within, if I select Artist quite a few don't appear in the list even though they are installed, I assume this is due to the tags associated with the artist/ album/ track not being correctly filled in, but it works for me - Mike

Yeah, we've had a previous discussion about how it uses the ID3 tags rather than the file name to show the Artist and track names.

It's a bit of a nest of snakes, but there is plenty of info on the net about what SHOULD happen.
You can use iTunes or several other utilities to edit the ID3 tags, but expect to have a few "funnies" - I suspect that TT's implementation is a little "unusual" as usual!

I had the same problem when trying to play an album.
It was playing in alphabetical order not track number order.
I found the way to get round this was to use the album mode instead
