I would like to point out that £19 for me buys over a weeks shopping or buys me two weeks of electric and gas. I havne't bought a takeaway or a round of drinks in lord knows how long, I wish I could. Not everyone is like that. If I had £19 spare I would subscribe happily. Infact I have even considered selling my GPS so I could pay my car tax.

That message most certainly wasn't aimed towards you - I'd written it before I saw your post and there was a substantial hint of sarcasm in the word 'essentials' when I mentioned take aways and rounds of drinks.

The fact is that some people try to find any way they can to wriggle out of paying their subscription whilst moaning like fury - despite it being clear to mere mortals like Dennis and I that facts don't add up.

Without meaning to sound patronising, my wife and I collect our small change in a jar and then cash it in once in a while, perhaps something like this would work for your PGPSW subscription - Dennis has admitted doing something similar for his holiday fund. Believe me, you never know when you might see a camera that qualifies you for a free lifetime subscription.

tis okay, I know who it was aimed at! However, I will accept all donations for a takeaway Very Happy

Good idea regarding the change, although I must admit to counting out coppers the other day to put some electric on!!! I wouldn't be on here otherwise!

I shall keep my eyes out for cameras, although my capture technique leaves alot to be desired and is liable to get me arrested for lurking under cameras!

I'm not going to pay a penny until I know what we'll be having - Indian, Chinese, kebab, pizza

Who's getting the beers in?

It's getting too cold for a BBQ, so we'll have to wreck your joint Wink

What are the co-ordinates for that garden wall we have to drive into?

Sorry, you're quite right - but I thought that I'd unwittingly upset another member and was therefore clearing things up before we all go off to bed.

In my house, we have a strict philosophy of "never go to sleep on an argument" and with good reason, but I don't want to drift even further off topic by going into details.

I would agree that £19 pa is good value but I was very happy with the £2 charge as an update twice a year if fine for me.

Does anyone really think that if a pirate was using the £2 charge to steal the database he would be put off by £19? Would they really say to themselves "I will steal the data for £2 but now it's £19 I won't"?

I think you have things the wrong way round. The problem was people would download it for £2 and then upload it to file sharing sites. If we caught them (and we do check) they are banned from the PGPSW site and loose any remaining subs. However at £2 a pop the ban wasn't that effective - they would just sign up under a new name, pay £2 and download the next copy. Now if we catch your copy of the database on a file sharing site, or if you sign up again under a new name after a ban, the sharers will loose £19 a time. It reduces the chances of repeat offenders and hopefully reduces the chances of someone sharing it in the first place.

I appreciate the point you are making but it doesn't really change my argument.

You still have to catch the file sharer and ban them. I guess this takes some time. 1 month ? 2? 3? more?. After say 6 months if they get banned they loose £9.50 and they can still re-register and wait to be caught again.

I don't see how this change will be a deterrent. It seems to me it will just upset the legitimate monthly subscribers.

I guess that we'll just have to wait and see if subscriptions drop.

...but the fact that a lot of people are also overlooking is that for legitimate monthly subscribers, the monthly subscription is now equivalent to £1.58/month - a saving of £5/year or a discount of about 21% (give or take a few decimal places)

We can find them as soon as they post them on-line. Just by downloading the offending file we can tell who downloaded and therefore "owned" that file. In practise people have been banned with 24 hours of taking out a subscription, downloading a file, uploading it to a file sharing site, we spot it, download it, check it, determine the owner and ban them. Now instead of loosing £2 that'll cost them £19, and they'll have to pay another £19 to do it again.

Secondly we have other methods to detect people who come back under different usernames to try and get round the ban. They of course will just be banned again, loosing another subscription payment.

Maybe but at £19 a year it'll hardly break the bank if you are already running a car and have a Sat Nav.
