Hi all,

As we are holiday-ing on the Norfolk broads this year, I would like to take our GPS with us...Is there any software out there that will do the job and show are current position on the broads? Something like Tom TOm but for the broads???

Currently I have tom-tom running on an Ipaq 5450 with a bluetooth reciever.

TIA

Thumbs Up

Funny you should ask! I took Memory-Map along with me on our Broads holiday last year and it worked well.

If you configure the software it will give you a plot line showing where you will be in an hour (user customisable) which is great for planning your stops etc. Also handy for indicating your speed as relying on RPM from the Tacho is not that accurate and helps keep to the speed limit which is policed in places.

So, am I right in thinking you have the whole UK map??

I really wanted to just get just the Broads as it will only be used once or twice a year.

Question

No, no I don't have the whole UK, I just have a couple of regions. FYI the entire Norfolk Broads are covered by OS Map Region 6.

Thanks Darren, and sorry for all the questions! Wink

So if I bought it from http://www.memory-map.co.uk/ What would I need to order to get it up and running on my Ipaq 5550?

Also Wink would I have any conflicts with TomTom? am I better to install it to a new memory card??

Thanks Happy

All you need is OS Landranger 50:000 Region 6. This includes the map as well as the PC and PDA client for £39.95.

There is no reason why you cannot use the same memory-card but be aware that the maps are large and to load the entire map set would require approx 330MB.

I've just checked and the regio from Norwich encompassing Lowestoft, Gt Yarmouth and all of the Northern areas around Wroxham and Stalham would comfortably fit into 30MB or so.

Also there may be a minor issue with TomTom if ou have a BT GPS and are using v2.08 or later of the driver. This locks the BT COM Port to TomTom preventing other apps from accessing the GPS. The simple resolution is to uninstall TomTom~GPS and soft reset. This resolves the issue and does not affect the use of TomTom.

If you have a laptop why not take it along as well, you can upload the track captured during the day on the PDA and review your progress on the PC client. Oh and most boats now have a 12v socket in addition to 240v but it is rarely near the 'bridge' so you'll either need a long lead or have to run on batteries during the day and recharge in the evening Thumbs Up
