Warning for nuvi Users loading POIs

Hi, it didn't ask that, the version was 3.80 which is the same vesion that I have on the Nuvi.

Sorry, I'm talking B*****ks, I tried again and it did ask, and I must have answered yes. Tried again and it doesnt go on to be visable on the PC.

hmm... this was the only issue i had as when i said 'no' to update the software it loaded fine with no problems. i was then able to access it via the pc to remove the file

I too have somewhat stupidly loaded more than 257 categories on my 670. I'd been careful for months and then added some more without thinking...

The problem I have is that I rang Garmin to ask for the magical piece of software to connect to the unit, and the woman I spoke to didn't know of the piece of software, only something that I could have loaded before I'd done the upload... Shocked

She gave me a returns number as she said that it could only be fixed by Garmin!

What would people recommend?

That I keep ringing Garmin until I reach someone who might know of this software?

Does anybody know what they call it?

Is it available for download anywhere?

I not sure if im having the same thing but i tried to update my camera datbase as supplied by this fine site and i get to tell the poi where to go and then i try to load and nothing but if i delete the file and reinstall the old data base then all goes well.

i have a custom poi with various stuff in it and then the camera database what does this 257no relate too.

yours confused.

257 relates to the number of custom POI files you can load to the device, each POI Category can contain thousands of individual locations, so you have lots to go at.
Each specific file that contains a csv file will count towards the total of 257, the newer versions of software from Garmin overcome this limitation though.
I very much doubt you are experiancing this 257 POI related problem though as when it happens it locks the devce and prevents it from booting up - Mike

Ah i am running the latest software from Garmin, i reinstalled the poi loader, tried uploading from different drives different source folders, but each time i tried to upload the latest camera database it just locked the poi loader program, i am guessing sumat aint quite right but ive havent got a scooby doo as to what.

I deleted all the poi files, created a 2 new folders unzipped the old data base into one with my other poi( folder A), i then unzipped the new database into anther folder with my other poi ( folder B), i than ran the poi loader program deleted the exsiting poi's and installed folder A all ok.
I then ran the poi loader again deleted the just installed database and the ran it again this time loading folder B

Nah no go just locked up so sumat on the new database aint good.

ps i run a nuvi 610t.

How many POI files are you trying to install in a single pass using POILoader? - count up the number of files ending with .csv in the folder you point POILoader at and report back the quantity - Mike

I'm another victim of this bug/limitation. Bought a Nuvi 660FM yesterday at Halfords, took it home, played around and installed all of the updates etc and then thought it would be a good idea to load some POI's.

I foolishly selected the individual categories and ended up with some 800 odd categories!!! It was only after the loading maps problem that i came across this page and read the warning on the POI download page. That'll teach me to be too hasty.

Maybe Garmin should amend the POILoader to stop this happening as it definately seems to be their issue but also maybe Pocketgps could add in a warning when you try to donwload the POI's should the category count be more than 257 just to stop some simpletons like me being too greedy Very Happy

Anyway, i was lucky, i took it straight back to Halfords and told them it crashed after updating the software and they replaced it straight away with no problems.

I haven't got the balls to add in any custom POI's now though as I dont think the same thing will wash a second time Rolling Eyes

If it's any help, I consistently had about 250 categories, and found them to be invaluable, so you should definitely load some back on, just be careful how many!

I'm still curious whether Garmin still have this software to use during the pre-boot sequence, or whether I need to send it back to them Sad

Hi Mike, i have 75 csv's in the file, i assume that changing 1 pgps csv for another will still result in 75. i will see what happens here and then delete all files and try to load just the database from pgps and see what happens,

ps is there a good poi that has all stuff needed that i can download as i think mine is a little out of date.

Hi 10ckm4...... yes I did exactly the same as you several months ago & had to return my 660 to GPS for a replacement (excellent service). I initially contacted Garmin for help. Their unhelpful desk just played dumb.... & it seems they still are!!! They must be getting hundreds of these units back, & yes its amazing there is nothing in their literature.

My "discussions" with GARMIN are detailed elsewhere. I don't think they realise how many people talk to each other, & do research on these forums. It just makes them look unprofessional & frankly, stupid.

Be brave & load the files you want, the speed cameras are excellent... it is a very useful feature, just watch the total number!!!!

I finally became brave enough to try again but this time with just the speed camera database. I tried it on my home PC and got the same error message from POILoader that i got the first time i tried with all of the categories loaded. It was a nerve racking time turning on the garmin but thankfully it went passed the loading maps page and came to life as normal. I think it may be a problem with my OS (Vista 64Bit) as i tried it on one of my other PC's and the POIloader worked as expected and the speed camera database is now loaded and working fine. Very Happy

I am not sure wether or not to bother with othe POI's as the garmin to seems to have a lot built in anyway and I dont want to risk any more stupidity on my part :-)

I agree though that more should definately be done to stop this happening - it cant be too hard to amed POILoader to count the number of categories before it tries to import them - Having worked with software developers before I know that both the developers and managers can be quite the arrogant bunch and assume that cos their software works in their production environment then it should work in everybody elses and if it doesn;t then it is our fault and not theirs - this attitude caused me no end of grieve for many years Very Happy

In regards to your comment about everyone talking unfortuanetly we only seem to do this when we run into problems and not prior - maybe we are just too trusting that the software and devices will do what is promised without problems!!

Just checked with Garmin and the helpful lady said that for the 250w, at least, the 257 category limit should still be observed. Necessary firmware changes are yet to be released.
She was not aware of any software that the (careless) owner could use to unfreeze their machine and that the unit would need to be returned to Garmin.
Care still needed methinks.
