Microsoft is expected to announce an update to its Windows Mobile operating system which powers PocketPCs and Smartphones next week.

The update, to be known as Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, is based on a Windows CE .Net core, but adds a variety of improvements, according to a source familiar with the situation. The new OS is expected to improve support for larger, VGA screens and screen rotation, among other features.

Microsoft declined to comment on any changes to the OS.

Hewlett-Packard is among the hardware makers expected to support the revamp with new products, according to a source familiar with the company's plans. Toshiba is not expected to have any new models immediately, but will allow current customers to upgrade to the new OS for free, the Japanese company said.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese manufacturer Asus this week showed off a Windows 2003-based handheld with a VGA screen at the CeBit trade show in Germany.

I think the rotatable screen and VGA resolution is going to be a great benefit. Surprisingly TomTom were unaware that their Navigator was already running in VGA on the Toshiba's through a softaware hack and admitted that this was more by luck than design!

Whilst I personally prefer portrait mode for in-car navigation as you get to see more of the road ahead, we used TTNav Palm in Landscape mode on route to CeBIT in Hannover and it worked really well, the benefit when mounted on the dash is Landscape Mode is less of a hinderance to your view out of the windscreen.

The assumption so far is this will be a ROM upgrade and 'should' be provided FOC by the manufacturers for download.

The only issue is that so far, not every manufacture has confirmed they will issue the update at all and for those that have there are some WM2003 models that they have confirmed will not be upgraded.

Mentioned also is the 5550 replacement - The iPAQ hx4700 - which will include both CompactFlash and SD slots. It will offer 128 MB of RAM, plus more than 20 MB in a File Store and WM2003SE. This model is expected to be available in late July.

So maybe news of any updates for 'current' iPAQ models will be forthcoming very soon. Thumbs Up
