Garmin have outdone TomTom in terms of worldwide sales - but only just! A recent report from Canalys shows that out of the 7.5million units sold in the 2nd quarter of 2007, 1.85million were Garmin and 1.80million were TomTom. Mio were in 3rd place with 0.7million followed by Magellan (0.4million) and Navman (0.2million).

As a direct comparison, during the 2nd quarter of 2006 only 3.4million units were sold worldwide which relates to a 116% growth! It's no wonder that we currently have over 205,000 registered users.

Although i like my Garmin I have no experience of TomTom or any others, so I haven't voted as i feel i'm not qualified to, however could the larger figures leaning to Garmin be due to it's massive US base, against TomTom with it's smaller European base.

It would be interesting to see here some figures of GPS owners who have had, or own, both makes running side by side, to give their opinion of advantages and disadvantages to both and how they handle against the other makes listed, to see which works the best on routing.

Although some threads include this info, it is widely scattered throughout the forum.

I was about to vote Navman, but only for the selfish reason that this is the brand I use. However TomTom almost totally own the market at the moment dispite sales, due to advertisment and market placment, and for this reason I won't vote for them. It's the B&Q phenomenon, everyone knows of them even though they arn't that good.

My vote still goes to Garmin, as the selection of products they supply is such that you can find a product for any purpose, and always does it efficiently. You generally get exactly what you pay for. I was just in the market for a gps for my bike. Not for routing but for tracking and statistics, and if it would work hiking, and skiing as well. As you would expect with Garmin I found exactly what I was Looking for!

Incase your interested it was an Edge 205. Not played with it properly yet though. Wink

I've used my Mio alongside a TomTom and the Mio was unanymously voted the better of the two for a number of reasons.

Did Mio not buy Navman? I'm sure I saw this on PGPSW, but can't find the article at the moment.

TomTom have bought TeleAtlas and Mio have announced their new 3D units, so things might change.

This poll might well be biased by people voting for what they use rather than what they think is best.

As i stated above this is exactly why i didn't vote, I think you need to have experiences of using some, or all the Sat Nav's to comment.

Will leave the voting to all the "die hards" such as MaFt, Darren, Oldboy and Co. Wink

are these just the ones who have paid for subscription (also free subscription etc), or does it also include the people who have signed up to use the forums for free?

these are registered users on the forum - on the forum index page it gives a few stats about numbers etc - that's where this was taken from

Speaking form someone who has both Garmin and TT the latter is far superior in terms of route selection .and the sales figures may be swayed in Garmins favour by the heavy discounting of some of their units.

Personally I think it's Garmin, because they have a long history of great products at good prices, backed up by customer support for legacy product; they define what the others do (Think back to early Street Pilot). If you want to know where the market is going, follow Garmin. Even better - keep a step ahead of them. But, I am an engineer and prefer function of fluff. Garmins cosmetics have in the past been a bit "industrial", there UI's typical of an "engineer" driven approach

Tomtom are like Microsoft, not revolutionary great, but so good the products availble now would be a dim shadow of what it is if we were without them. Problem is they suffer some of the follys of youth. They abandon customers with 6 month old products, in favour of the latest, shiny new toys. Unless they grow up fast, they will fail as the market matures. Tomtom suits people who need cosmetics with function. They obviously don't let their engineers near the UI design. (Apart from the UI specialises, who are engineers, but not "engineers")

Others have had their time, and should retire gracefully, while there are a couple in the wings that have the ability, but maybe not the desire, to change the status quo. 3

This reminds me of the old joke about the young bull and the old bull. The young bull sees the gate to the paddock with the cows in it is open, and says to the old bull "lets race down there and grab a cow", to which the old bull replied "You do that, I'll stroll on down and make the most of the herd. Laughing

Hi guy's, first post on here but have been using Nav for many years

I personally have used both Garmin and TomTom and much prefer the TomTom interface and experince by far.

Your figures qouted above are they for vehicle navigation or do Garmin's worldwide sales including Marine applications? It would be good to get a true comparison, I'll bet only 10/15% of Garmin sales equate to vehicle navigation

427, Canalys report on a like-for-like basis and not on company sales volumes as a whole (marine, military, aero-space, commercial, etc). They would only be comparing PND sales.

I voted tomtom as that is what I have, I do like the Garmin 550 for the motorcycle over the tt rider but they are far too expensive, so thats why I picked TT over Garmin

This is a very good point...

...the quality of Betamax was higher than VHS, but because VHS out-sold Betamax, that became the standard:

Quote:
Exactly how and why VHS won the war has been the subject of intense debate. The commonly-held belief is that the technically superior Betamax was beaten by VHS through slick marketing.

Edited to add Betamax / VHS quote and link
