BT has been experimenting with this stuff for ages. Only reason we don't have it yet is comercialism. Why sell us the best stuff when you can make more money by continuously upgading it. A leak I got a two years ago was a 250Mb connection over optical network.

Plan is though, we will all be broadband within a few years, and all that is analog will be thing of the past. Phones an all.
