Come on guys - Stargate was offering a complaint about Downing Street doing it.

Stargate Downing Street is required to answer all those people because they sent in a petition. The e-mail reply method is cheaper than sending them all a letter. I think Downing Street should NOT have replied, but what would all those who signed the petition have said if they didn't. Did you sign it? If so, did you get a reply?

No-one really pays per e-mail in the same way you do with the Mail and stamps. Interestingly the article states that

Quote:
"Last week I had lunch with someone who sends out 180,000 a week as a newsletter, which cost him £600," he says. "That would make it £6,000, but it could be much less or much more. Plus there are the resources to craft it and put it together."

I suspect the "cost" isn't a real cost as such but a calculation of how much time and resources it would be compared to sending the same numbers of postal letters.
