Some of you may recall discussions in our forums over time regarding using the HP iPAQ 1910/1915/1930 and using InfraRed to get a GPS working due to it not supporting a serial port for GPS or Bluetooth. There were several prototype systems that people had designed, but none of these have been marketed until now!

Haicom have come up with a good solution that supports InfraRed transfer so now it's possible to use a Haicom 204 GPS Receiver on the lower spec models iPAQ models. Cool!

So it uses IR, after all?

Then Tungsten E must be too. If so then it is logical and not magic by kirrio.

Haicom's new PDA mount might look a little bulky but it's going to give you several unique features:-

- Channel voice from your PDA through the speaker in the mount
- Plug any Haicom GPS into the cradle using the standard PS/2 connector
- Changeable PDA connectors to work with nearly all PDA's
- IR Wand for iPAQ 1910/1915/1930

It is exactly the same concept as the Tom Tom car kit for their mouse GPS package which has been on the market for a long time.

But Tom Tom does not make the IR converter for the likes of Ipaq 19xx.

Tom Tom might consider it but I think not. The market is small, unless there are more new PDA/PPCs without any bottom serial ports.

I suppose it will work with iPAQ 2210 too? For instances where GPS is non-bluetooth?

Remember that it is a cradle.
Unlike a cable which is compatible with a whole range of models, form factor of different PDA is different so a different model of cradle must be used.
So make sure you buy/order one specific for your model.

I was initially looking for a PDA with Bluetooth + Wi-Fi (e.g HP iPAQ 4150), but was offered a brand new HP iPAQ 1910 for £58.
Therefore I snapped it up and I am very happy with it, but now I would like to use it with a GPS.

Excuse my ignorance, but the interface at the bottom of the 1910 is used to sync it with a PC, is that not good enough to use ?

From looking at the forums it appears that the 1910 does not have serial port connectivity for a GPS and only has IrDA or the SD Card. The SD Card being ruled out as it is required for the SD card which contains the maps.
Therefore I was pleased when I saw this thread on this IrDA option.

Where can I purchase a GPS system to work with the 1910 ?
OR
should I purchase a better PDA with bluetooth and use a bluetooth GPS system ?

Smile

The 1910's bottom port, like all 1900 series, lacks the serial port hardware of other iPAQs. It's the serial port that's used to connect a wired GPS. All that is implemented on the 1900 series is charging and the USB port - which, as client only (like all iPAQs), can't drive a USB GPS.

You need USB host capabilities to drive external USB devices (in the case of USB synchronisation, the desktop or laptop computer acts as the host and the Pocket PC as the client). Some iPAQs do have USB host capabilities, but they're not externally exposed and are only used for internal hardware. The Wi-Fi hardware on the 5450 and 5550 is implemented this way.

To my knowledge, the only Pocket PCs that expose USB host capabilities are certain Toshibas.

The result of this is that the only option to connect a GPS to most 1900 series is via IR, though the 1940 also has Bluetooth.

Total PDA (www.totalpda.co.uk) also has stock of these now.

I have tested it and it works really well!

And if you don't want to buy a complete cradle you can also take a look at home.tiscali.nl/~t_aalberts and the production version at www.i-con.nl. These are also available for different GPS receivers than the Haicom receivers.

Hi, Guys, I asked this question on another forum and it was suggested I ask here so here I am.
I guess it's a related topic, Laughing Out Loud

Hi Guys, I have an Ipaq 1910 and as a simple PDA, it is just what I
need but I had a hankering for a GPS system.
I already figured out that I should have kept my ideas to myself
because of the serial port problem but I went ahead anyway and got a
GPS kit. But now I'm stuck.
The kit in question is a cradle like any other but it has several
extra bits. A socket for the serial cable from a Haicom 204S (Which I
have). A lead from the cradle with a gizmo on the end to transfer info
to the Ipaq's I-R port. and a cigarette socket charger.
My main problems are as follows..............
1.... Is there something special you need to do on the Ipaq to make it
receive I-R data from the GPS mouse? I've never used I-R before and
when I had a look in "Programmes", there is a tick in "Receive all
data" but is there anything else I need to do?
2.... Another thing is that when everything is plugged in, the mouse
doesn't seem to go through a "self-checking" routine because no little
red lights start flashing.
3... Lastly, When I'm trying to set the correct GPS and method of
connecting, It won't let me use "Haicom GPS" and "Native IR". By that,
I mean the Ipaq won't make the tick go in the box to SET that option.
Should I be using something else or is that problem related to the
first 2?
Cheers Guys.
Any help appreciated.
PS. I'm in UK and using TT3
