A company called Bluei have announced the release of a new GPS. They say "GPS Combined with Bluetooth Equals Bluei".

The Bluei is an extremely small, high performance, wireless, GPS receiver made without compromises. It brings you wireless GPS in a matchbox size.

Hi!

I own a Bluei GPS and I must really say that I am VERY satisfied with it!

Before Bluei I owned a Navman 4410 which is bigger, heavier and uglier Wink

.

The battery consumption is very low, and I have used it for about 10 hours without having to recharge it.

There is no negative about it at all, it comes with a car-charger, a strap for your hand and neck. The only “negative” I would mention is that it is only capable of connecting to 8 satellites in stead of Navmans 12. But, on the other hand, it is very rarely to be connected to 12 satellites at once.

Can any expert out there tell us what the practical implications of 8 channel vs the more usual 12 channel operation are likely to be? If the performance is OK, this looks a very attractive package.

The main reason for supplying an 8 channel as opposed to 12 channel satellite receiver is it draws nearly half as much power as a 12 sat receiver, enabling you to get more operating time out of the battery.

8 sat receivers generally were considered not that good, but technology has advanced. 8 Sat receivers have also traditionally used software drivers rather than a processor on-board to cut battery usage.

Currently there are 24 satellites orbitting the earth that are on and working with GPS. Because the position in orbit you will only see a maximum of 12 in-view at anyone time. On average you see 7-9 sats with a 12 sat receiver, but on good days when there is little ionosphere interference or multipath errors you can get up to 12 sats. The more sats the more accurate (usually) your position. The less sats, accuracy then flies out the window. So really more is better, and that's why you normally see 12 sat receivers over 8.

That being said, if you're not having problems receiving sats and keeping a 3D fix (4 sats) then you really shouldn't have much to worry about. The only thing you may find is that you could lose a fix quicker than a 12 sat receiver because there are less sats you can lock onto.

Very good Dave! I now fully understand the advantages of 12 sattelites vs 8. But as I said, my Bluei works very well in any conditions in my car.

I really hope that you are going to test it later on.
It is developed by KTH (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan), or Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, and is manufactured by a company in Malmö, south of Sweden.

I have tried opening dialogue with Bluei 3 times to no avail. What usually happens with a lot of new companies is they ignore requests sent to them, then realise their product isn't selling and seek out sites like us and beg us to revie wthem Confused

I'm sure we'll get one eventually, perhaps we'll see if they're at CeBit this year.
