I have just fed the horse, i might need him for the journey to work tomorrow - it might be quicker, also it also doesn't have a number plate, so two fingers to the cameras. Mind you will have to get some high octane hay to reach camera speed but must be faster than 20mph.

Don't worry Stargate. Remember, I'm only fifty years from being 118, so I already drive at 20mph. If they have a 20mph speed limit for everybody, they'll think I deliver early!! Laughing Laughing

They are only doing 20mph inside the towns, and already you can not drive at 30 there, so it won't make a very big difference, only the people who suddenly drive at 50mph in the towns to pass everybody else. Maybe you will have to get out of bed a little bit earlier. I won't get the sack anyway because I am my own boss and I'm a really good kind, thoughtful, loving boss (and if I wasn't closer to 118 than to 0, I'd be good looking too). Laughing

Extract taken from the link to news above:
Quote:
In Portsmouth the average speed on residential roads is only 24mph, while in London the average is just 10mph – the same speed as horse-drawn carriages a century ago.

Joking aside, within some towns and city centres this idea may not be that potty, it is rare you can even do 20mph in the centre of London.
I’m not sure how it has been tested, but there has even been evidence submitted that proves that in higher speed areas, when the speed limit has been reduced, traffic has moved quicker as it eliminates the drivers driving fast, then braking, causing a buffer effect as; when train carriages jolt each other down the line when the first one brakes.
This could make a good argument on traffic moving slower, in turn creating a faster flow of traffic, as it is all moving at a constant rate..

Quote:
A spokeswoman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “A reduction to 20mph could reduce the accident rate by 74 per cent.”

Again if this is true, (we have to believe the figures again) you can’t argue with this, much as I too need to get places quickly as does everybody else, if we can save all those lives, I for one will learn to live with it.

Maybe driving slower will help us all to not get so stressed out and help us live longer.
See DennisN I’ve found a solution to your age problem.

If my memory serves me correctly, and sometimes it doesn't as I am rapidly catching Dennis up, most traffic jams are caused by excessive and unnecessary braking, it has a knock on effect and does not help anybody (except the initial 'brakee' who doesn't tail end the car in front) Laughing

This has pretty much already happened in London. Worse still is that all not major roads are going to have humps in them and even some "A" roads in London have cushion humps too. Madness.

This is my first post Smile

20mph sort of makes sense for heavly congested areas or areas near schools, but a "across the board" 20mph limit in all residential areas seems like over kill.

If I had my conspiracy hat on I would say it is government money making scheme...Low speeds will mean that you will have to drive in a lower gear, lower gears mean more fuel, more fuel mean motorist will have to buy more fuel, which means the government get more money from the tax on fuel!

I thought the governement was committed to reducing emmisions, but surely having a lower speed limit will mean a) we will be on the road longing which will mean more exhaust emmisions b) driving a lower gear will increase car revs which again leads to higher exhaust emmisions. Confused

Couple of questions - will this apply to public transport and where do I send my bill for a new gearbox when it packs-up because it has been stuck in 2nd for most of its life?

Welcome to Nanny State Britain!

No you haven't - remember, I already drive so slowly my daughter won't come out with me (and I won't go out with her driving 'cos she scares me rigid). My age problem is that it's taking soooooo loooong to get to 118. When I say 50 years, I'm rounding off - it's actually 50 years and a few months and (except when I'm falling off ladders), time passes very slowly.
Stargate you will have to change down a gear or two - I only have a poor little white van, so I change down to 3rd gear for 20mph zones - in your Ferrari I suppose you'll have to change down to first gear.
A lot of people say that 20mph will be a disaster, but it won't. We're already down to those sort of speeds - indeed, in London I'd positively love to get UP to 20mph!

Correct me if I'm wrong...but wasn't the variable spped limits on both the M's 25 & 42 introduced for these reasons??
