Further to Darrens comment above concerning BMW cars with HUD, the windscreen is a special design to prevent unwanted reflections and is very expensive to replace. I dont think this is generally known by insurance companys otherwise they would be raising the windscreen excess payments.

I haven't seen any pricing information yet either - probably out of the reach of most of us anyway Sad

I'm waiting for a UK Distributor to announce pricing but it's expected to be in the £70-80 range so not too expensive.

Hi Darren, thanks for the interesting writeup. Is the unit still usable without the adhesive tinted panel on the windscreen? Looking forward to the video.

It isn't, whilst you can just about see the display, the two surfaces of the windscreen cause a double image. You would need the tinted panel.

Here's a sample video. The full resolution version shows the display much more clearly but it's 100Mb Sad

Thanks for the video :D. Am I right in thinking that the HUD shows the more 'accurate' speed (detected via satellites) that is typically a few mph lower than the car speedo as found in most portable satnav devices? If it's confusing, I meant actual car speed on the dash shows a speed of 30mph while TomTom (or the HUD in this case) shows 26/7 mph.

You are correct, it shows GPS computed speed in MPH or KPH (user configurable).

Of course this isn't a "proper" HUD in that you need to focus your eyes on the windscreen to read it. Proper HUDs, such as those found in jet fighters, are collimated so you can read them with your eyes focused at infinity: in effect, the HUD appears to hang in the air.

I think we all realise it isn't the same thing!

Laughing Out Loud :D! Military grade HUD will cost a lot more than the predicted price of £7/80!!! I'm interested in trying one out when it's released - I can't quite visualise what mid-air projection would be like without seeing the real thing.

It's very impressive!

I have had the privilege of seeing one as part of the work I used to do for a major computer manufacturer whilst working with aerospace companies. It really does look like the pointers and information is just out in front of you - no re-focussing needed. Unfortunately it wasn't in a real 'plane - weren't allowed near them - but as part of a very effective cockpit simulator. HUD was real - the backround was simulated/projected.

Couldnt you have slipped it into your pocket & revised it for your car Laughing

You might get such a device to physically fit in to a car - but not without serious difficulties then there is a slight problem in powering it, cars use 12V DC Aircraft Military or Civil use 200V three phase 400Hz power - that is not (thankfully) available in a car.
Even if you got it to fit and power it up the windscreen would still cause serious degradation of the projected image - aircraft windscreens tend to be optically perfect (or as near as possible) - cars are built to far less demanding standards.
I appreciate no one is going to obtain an aircraft HUD, but I thought it worthwhile pointing out the "slight" problems in using such a device - the more modern Wide Angle HUD's are far more effective, but I certainly wouldn't want one in front of me in a car Wink - Mike

Unfortunately it was helmet based - display onto a window/windscreen etc is impractical in these situations as the pilot needs to move his/her head through 180 deg. The helmet has sensors to determine the position of the head and adjust the display - all very impressive - and a tad more than £80.

Just before I left the company we had a Formula 1 racing car (real practice car from the season before last) with similar helmet technology for simulation of the Monaco GP circuit - really good fun. When you turned your head all the background moved correctly and together with audio information it provided a very realistic experience. It's suprising just how few visual clues there are on the circuit to the direction you are meant to be going - ended up going down the pit lane a number of times!

I don't think you're right actually. The speed display is not attached to the windscreen - only the reflector. The actual image comes from the device on the dashboard. This means that the apparent position of the speed reading is at a distance BEYOND the glass that is equal to the distance between the device and the windscreen reflector. So actually the speed reading appears to float behind the glass by this same distance over the bonnet somewhere (as with any reflection). If you want the speed reading to appear to float out near the front of your car, you simply need to drill a hole in your dashboard all the way down to the footwell and then put the device underneath that hole Smile

If you think about a mirror, you are not focusing on the glass front, you are focusing on the objects 'behind' the glass front.
