I have just bought a Garmin i3 secondhand and its running v.2.20, and city select europe nt v.7 and it has speed camera data on it.

1. Can i/should i update the operating softwear to a newer version?
2. will i lose anything?
3. will newer software work withthe map i have already?
4. can i get a newer map?

bear in mind i dont know if its been registerd or how old it is, but it seems to be working ok (only one dead end lane so far!)

this is my first sat nav and being on a tight budget i have read good things about the i3 on this forum, i hope i have made a good choice.

thanks for any advice you can give as i dont want to end up with a dud unit.

ps. i have downloaded Garmin 'Gstart' software

But seriously this would depend on how much you intend to use the thing.

There is indeed a unit software update available (v3.20 - free) and new maps (v9 - £45).

The unit software updates add some functionality (reading the version history will tell you what's changed), but some on this forum have experienced issues like lock-ups and slow updates in map mode on v3.x. Others have had no such issues (e.g. myself), so YMMV.

Have a read on the forum to see if you think upgrading the unit software is worth it. Also note that you can upgrade to versions other just the very latest from Garmin - again search the forum as some say that v2.70 is the most stable release.

You'll need to check in with Garmin regarding registering a second hand unit that may have already been registered - you will definitely need to do this if you intend to update your maps.

First thing I'd suggest is to backup/copy all the files on your satnav to your pc...If things did go wrong after an update..at least you could bang the old stuff back on again.

I guess you could take a look at the date of the POI files on the card, but at £2 the new database is cheap and forever changing to keep up to date with roadworks etc.

I got an e-mail from the previous owner and he says that the speed camera data was done in November so i will update that ASAP.
He also said that he did not register the unit with Garmin when he bought it, so could i get a free map upgrade from v.7 when i register it? what do you think?

No I don't think so; if it had v.8 maps you might have been in luck. Nothing much lost in trying though.

Thanks for the number ill give them a ring.

i have tried to back up the transflash card onto my pc and then back onto a new micro sd card which seemed to work ok but when i put in the new card the unit asks me to put the supplied software cd in my pc (which i dont have) the original card is still working fine,

i copied all the files off the trans flash card so what am i doing wrong?

i was trying to create a duplicate card to update and keep the original untouched in case it all went wrong.

thanks.

You cannot copy the data to a new card as it is locked to the actual card itself, if you are worried about loosing the card put some black tape over the slot then it can't fall out - Mike

As you have a full back-up on the PC you can simply copy that back to the original card if you mess up the data (unlikely though) - you can copy the original data back to the original card and it will work, you cannot copy the original data to a different card as that won't work - Mike
