Want to win Ł1000 and a Navman N60i? It is easy... all you have to do is enter the Annual NavPix awards.

Navman have announced the launch of the first Annual NavPix Awards. This competition is open to everyone, you do not need a NavPix compatible GPS system to enter, indeed all you actually need is a digital photo, you could even scan an image in to enter. You also need to be able to pinpoint where that picture was taken. Then you browse your way to www.navpix.net/competition sign up and upload your image.

The competition is judged by the community, registered users are allowed a single vote for the NavPix of their choice. The NavPix with the most user votes wins...

The competition runs until the 11th February 2007, so you still have pleanty of time to get your favourite picture included. The sooner you get your NavPix accepted the more chance you have of winning.

The Prizes

We’re giving away:

For the overall winner – A top of the range NavPix enabled Navman N60i PLUS Ł1000 in cash.

For the 5 runners up – One of five NavPix enabled Navman N40is.

The Rules

The competition begins on January 11th 2007 and ends on February 11th 2007. We’re looking for evocative images that convey a clear sense of place. The winners will be based on total number of votes received. Certain types of picture will not be considered and will be deleted on submission. These include:

* Images containing nudity
* Copyrighted images where you are not the copyright holder
* Images of children

Furthermore, we will not tolerate text that is obscene, threatening or violent.

Each person who visits the competition site is entitled to a single vote for one image in the prize vote competition. You may not vote for your own pictures. Any attempt to register multiple votes for an image through the use of aliases or varied email addresses will not be tolerated – pictures involved may be disqualified. In this, and in all other matters, the judges’ decision is final.

Entry into the competition implies acceptance of these rules and also your agreement that images submitted may be added to the NavPix library.

The NavPix Awards Press Release wrote:
Navman launches the first Annual NavPix Awards

LONDON, January 2007 – This month, satellite navigation pioneer Navman launches the company’s first NavPix™ Awards; up for grabs is a Ł1000 prize and the latest in satellite navigation technology. The competition enables people to create their own NavPix™ by uploading existing pictures of their favourite places and the location details on the NavPix™ website. Visitors to the site can then vote for their favourite location, and the winning entry will be the NavPix™ with the most votes. The competition can be entered online at www.Navpix.net/competition. The winner will receive a top of the range Navman N60i and Ł1000 cash and the five runners up will each be given a Navman N40i.

‘We have a great collection of NavPix™ on the Navman website and are keen to encourage people to share more of their pictures on the site’, says European PR Director, Colin Holloway. ‘We hope that the awards will provide some really inspiring pictures of unusual places and also introduce new users to the existing NavPix™ library. It is a great resource and we want people to be able to make the most of it.’

NavPix™ is a revolutionary technology, unique to Navman, which enables you to navigate to pictures. The Navman N series are all NavPix™ enabled and the N40i and N60i also have built-in cameras so that when you photograph places they are geographically stored on the satellite navigation device. Whenever you want to return to the destination you simply click on the picture and you will be directed there. The company already has an existing NavPix™ library on its website where users can share and download NavPix™ -www.navpix.net – so you can use other peoples’ pictures to navigate to a location.

I wish people would not post pictures of Antelope Canyon... It is one of my favourite places and will suddenly become a major tourist attraction Sad

Bryce Canyon is OK though, and a wonderful place to visit at dawn or dusk.

Sorry Mike, but it Antelope Canyon is incredibly photogenic (if you use a tripod and know how to take long exposure pictures!) and is my best chance of winning the competition.

Since posting I've realised that the NavPix site is bugged. It always says that you've already voted for a picture - even if you're voting for the first time. More importantly, I have noticed that after a couple of my friends voted for my pictures, their rating went DOWN. We've done a few tests and it seems the star rating can down with extra votes as well as up. It seems to have some serious issues and therefore the picture with the most votes will not necessarily win Sad

I know I have been there three times and 2 years in a row. The second year they had not had any flash floods and the floor of the canyon was 12 feet above the level of the previous year.

You do have to go well prepared. A proper camera and tripod are essential. You also need to go there at mid-day to get the light coming in directly overhead. This really lights the canyon up and it can be a BIG disappointment if you dont get that special light.

I think this competition was somewhat fixed. The 5 runner's up pictures are largely terrible snapshots rather than great photographs. None of the pictures that I thought would win are even a runner up. The winning photo isn't all that great either. The idea of the website pushing the idea of asking your friends to vote for your pictures, rather than the general public is also rather flawed I think. If your picture really is any good, then it will aquire votes natually - you shouldn't need to spam everyone you know.

I don't think their faulty website helped matters. If you voted for a picture that had 5 stars, it's rating always went down to three stars and stayed there. It also had (and still has) a plethora of JavaScript errors implying their website developers don't really know what they're doing.

Absolutely, I agree with your comments! I wrote to Navman during the course of the competition because it was obvious from some of the ' not so good' pictures (in my humble estimation), that were consistently up there at the top. Other pics with no stars at all (not mine) were ones that I would use as Navpix which were both asthetically pleasing, well structured and pictorially representative of the destination that they portrayed. I pointed out to Navman that the the competition judging was flawed as it was so open to abuse. If they are to run another competition, then it would be much fairer to have independent judges who would judge the pictures on their merits.
I also think that the competition should be for pictures that can be used as Navpix - not some of the pictures of relations on the beach, family pets etc...
Sorry about that.........still I have got it off my chest and I fell better. Wink

Incidentally, I did get a prompt, pleasant reply from Navman who merely agreed that the rules had been set for 2007 and that they would look at them again....maybe.....for the future.
