While the previous version of Google Maps Mobile was only a static viewer for Java enabled devices the newly released version features a native Pocket PC/Smartphone client and adds a few new functions:

connection to GPS receiver
routing calculation
real time traffic (US only I guess)
find businesses near you

While voice navigation is still absent this is already an interesting development - Google Maps are downloaded dynamically over your data connection and you can choose between street maps and satellite images. Remember the 3D stuff - looks like this is coming to a mobile device near you soon..

On your mobile device, open http://www.google.com/gmm and start the small installer. A flatrate data connection is highly recommended!

Out of interest which internet tarrif are you using with the T-Mobile device? - I only ask as both my HTC Artemis and MDA-CIII work fine with an O2 sim fitted but fail to work with the T-Mobile card inserted - Mike

Maybe it's WM5 only, or Microsoft BT stack only. Although it does work fine with the internal receiver on the XDA Orbit.

Have you tried to extract the files manually from the CAB? Use the .000 file to find out the correct file names.

Fixed the T-Mobile issue the contraption needed a reset to work!

In use the images are quite good, but forget it unless you are have a mobile phone contract that doesn't charge per MB for GPRS. In use simply selecting the software to track the GPS position shows you on the map. (The blue dot, which in reality flashes with a position fix, or grey when poor reception).

If you prefer a photo rather than 2D map:

Or go down the local pub and get a free pint for showing the landlord his pub from space
(worth a try - and worked last night)

Mike,

Using Flext contract with Wed n Walk.

Nice, screen shots. It will be interesting to see how they develop this. Could be a Tom Tom Rival if they add voice directions and 3D.

mikealder - How did you get the UK maps to work on this, as it is not on the list of countries covered on the new Google Maps Mobile application.

Thanks

mikealder - Sorry, just realised that the default is USA for some reason and search will go to the UK.

I think the selections are language based they don't reflect the country (as such), as you say select USA, then zoom out before panning across the Atlantic, or connect up your GPS and select the Track Location (GPS) once a position fix is attained the map will update. Mike

Its works with Navizon, in case you don't have a GPS. However Navizon's search function actually works (my google search's returns nothing).
Navizon caches 512Mb of maps and its free, used with a GPS.

Apparently you can't specify where the googlemap cache is located so it fills memory quickly as it defaults to the device, this need to fixed this as its useless without cached maps.

Another limitation, Googlemaps simply closes without a data connection, instead of simply using the cache.
