The only problem with ordering Wi-Fi bits from the US is that not every design is a worldwide one.
There are two more channels in ETSI regulated areas (including the UK) than in FCC regulated areas (the US), also I think at least technically using a card that lacks the appropriate type-approval markings for the EU in the UK is illegal (akin to using an unlicensed radio transmitter).
Obviously, I don't know the precise details of the Sandisk card. It could very easily be a worldwide design and carry the appropriate CE marking with the necessary suffixes to show that it is approved. The Sandisk site is a little vague on this.
However, this is something to be aware of - as well as the possibility that UK Customs will leave you with a bill of somewhere around 25% of the value of the item (for VAT, duty and the charge imposed by the Royal Mail for collecting the VAT and duty from you).
Well Drew - I have to admit that I doubted you. But as I was in New York last week I ordered one of these SDIO Wifi cards from ebay and had it shipped to my hotel.... and it works great in my Medion 40600 from Aldi. Wifi range isn't too great but I'm really pleased - especially after Medion support told me it definitely wouldn't work!
sorry I bring this "older" topic back to top, but I realy need to know if this PDA supports SDIO? I know you mentioned it but are you realy talking about this PDA?

From December I'm using the Medion PDA SD40600 which I also bought from Aldi. Last week I ordered from a shop on eBay the Sandisk SD WiFicard discussed here.
Based on the information I got from this forum I did not hestitate to order one. Within 3 days this was delivered at my home for only $59 and.....working as expected!
The Medion PDA certainly has a SDIO-slot to be able to work with this WiFicard.
At home I'm using a wireless ADSL-router (webr@cer1004 from Topcom) to which is connected my PC, my laptop and now my PDA too.
All wireless! Even my neighbour has installed a USB LAN stick on his PC to be able to work on my router on the ADSL-connection.
I have read that in the UK the Medion PDA's are supplied with a set
of two 256Mb SDcards. Like we have had here in Holland.
One of those cards contains the map of the UK while here in Holland we are supplied with the map of the Benelux (Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg),
And of Germany and the main-routes in Europe.
Is someone interested to swap copies of these maps?
Without any sale?
This summer I'll spend my holidays in the UK, that's why..

Magro, glad to hear you are happy with your Medion.
One small point, we don't like forum members requesting pirated software so I would apprecaite it if you did not ask for 'copies' of maps here. Let's keep it all above board and let the manufacturers make some profit or Medion may decide not to bother next time _________________ Darren Griffin
Thx., drew, for pointing me to that thread #5271 where I could exactly find what I was looking for. And, Darren, what about the last reply on that topic? As you'll see, obtaining other maps of Europe is not as easy as it seems. Although the pricing of maps is high; even if you could affort paying these amounts they just don't deliver! What else can you do?
Just swap? From person to person?

I'm sorry, I appreciate that it may not be easy to obtain maps for the Medion bundle but it does not change the fact that 'sharing' copies of commercial software including map data is piracy. I don't intend entering into a debate on that topic, we reserve the right to delete any posts that offer or request pirated software and will ban any forum member who continues to flout this rule. By all means don't enter into a discussion on piracy, which nobody will condone in public, but shouldn't we also be talking about the fact that European maps are clearly not available, while they are being advertised as being available. Is this legal advertising? Also, by all means threaten your readers with a ban. I have never talked about, or condoned piracy on line but ban me if you want. Threatening your readers and then saying lets leave it at that isn't the right way to interact in a forum. I thought we had freedom of speech in this country.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here? I appreciate that obtaining extra maps has proved difficult, I have attempted to ellicit clarification from Medion but none has been forthcoming so far. However, all we ask is that our readers do not request pirated software or discuss circumventing copy protection etc in 'our' forums, we have no desire to become net nanny's but we have to act responsibly and be seen to be doing so.
I am simply clarifying our position on this issue so that there can be no complaint if anyone persists in flouting the rules and is subsequently banned and I am confident that the majority of our readers feel the same. By all means raise merry hell about Medion's failure to make additional country map sets available and we will champion the cause. _________________ Darren Griffin

It looks as if the quote tags are the wrong way round in the reply immediately above this one - which is confusing to say the least. However, I don't have moderator privileges, so I can't fix it. Even though I've got a higher user status than anyone who isn't a Pocket GPS team member, I still can't edit my own posts, let alone anyone else's.
I don't think Darren was intending to threaten anyone in the current discussion - he was, I believe, merely reaffirming forum policy that all discussion of piracy, including map "swapping" is forbidden, and suggesting that if anyone took this thread in that direction that options included the thread being closed and members being banned.
There's something faintly ridiculous about the current situation. People want the maps, and they're prepared to buy them if only they were available for sale.
I don't know whether the team have got any contacts at Navigon or within Medion/Aldi - but it would seem that the right way ahead is that some kind of approach is made to see if this impasse can be resolved in order that the maps become available. After all, if there's a demonstrated market, it does become more of an incentive to release them!
Meanwhile, I believe those of you with the Medion package have an option that few of us do - the ability to take the package back for a full refund for at least the first year. However, you have got a good deal - an alternative with full European maps is likely to cost you rather more than what you have.
If you're happy with the hardware you have, and the add-on maps remain unavailable (or turn out to be very expensive), it may be an option to replace the software with a completely new package - though I'm not sure what people would suggest. I believe CoPilot with all the European maps can prove cheaper than TomTom Navigator 2 with all the European maps if you shop around. Indeed, you may be able to do a deal with Navigon to buy replacement software from them directly with full European maps - has anyone explored that angle?
