Nope, you're out of luck. The e310 only sports a USB client connector, not a serial port as would be required for communication with the etrex vista. I'm not sure - maybe there is a USB to serial converter out there...

Laughing Out Loud oh yeah btw the e310 does have a serial adapter.... hell its got built in ethernet.... Laughing Out Loud explain the 25 pins in the bottom... eth, usb and serial... and that leaves 6 pins spare ;)

I don't think there's built in wired Ethernet on the e310 - I'm not aware of any consumer Pocket PC that does have built in wired Ethernet.

Most Toshibas have USB host capabilities, and there's various solutions that procure a serial port via a USB to serial chip (usually the very common Prolific PL-2303 chip).

However, with an e310, I think you're out of luck. I was going to suggest you looked at the web site of the excellent PC Mobile. His Toshiba page is here. If you look at the bottom of the page he says that there's no serial port or USB host capabilities on an e310.

It sounds as if the e310 may join the all the 1900 series iPAQs (apart from the 194x, which has Bluetooth - I think the 1930 may have SDIO, but you've got nowhere to put a memory card if you use a SDIO GPS) in the category of the handful of Pocket PCs that are useless for GPS because you can't connect a receiver. Infrared interfacing is a possibility, and there's at least one homebrew solution, but it's an area laden with problems and the potential market for any commercial interfaces are small.

No.

Most Pocket PCs only provide USB client capabilities - that is, they can operate as a USB device where something else is the host (usually a PC to allow USB ActiveSync).

Driving USB peripherals from a Pocket PC requires USB host capabilities - which your Toshiba seems to lack. This is a protocol issue - not simply one of connector gender.

Laughing Out Loud ok well ive found out what i can do... Laughing Out Loud well the e310 can host hardware ;) but due to the fact that the e310 doesnt feed power to the usb device from it's own battery the usb device doesnt power up... i bodged up a cable from a usb cable extenstion and a gender changer and used some power from my usb hub... got a usb -> serial adapter working Smile
