The FM Transmitter is only for US, Australia and NZ. Although currently illegal here, the Government is planning on relaxing the law. It's not clear whether the transmitter is not there, or simply disabled...

roachdog - I ended up doing the same as you in a round about way - TT1 v2, back to Nuvi 310D , Now Nuvi 660.


Still having problems with TMC. Can you advise what P/N GTM 21 you have. Also is the Green LED for TMC on the cigarette charger always on.? I've noticed thats the most reliable way to tell if you are receiving TMC data as the 660 stores old information.

I think many people would be interested to know your reasons for taking the TT1v2(3) back and reverting to the 310D and now the 660. I returned my 310D and can't decide what the next step is. Perhaps a new thread or a PM?

They say the FM receiver is only for U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. My guess is that it is present but disabled in software depending on either which maps are loaded or it's geographical location.

Maybe someone could get one, set it's location to USA (with no sat lock) and see if the FM transmitter works. Twisted Evil

I would guess that they will bring out a firmware upgrade when the government repeals the archaic law which prevents people legally using low power FM transmitters like this.

My experience of using an iTrip on my iPod are that it's next to useless in London because there are so many stations (not all of them legal) that you can't find any clear spectrum.

Maybe they should reserve some of it for use by transmitters like this! Exclamation

JoshT, looked into the traffic situation in more detail and it's not quite as good as I originally thought. Think the main difference is, as you said, the 660 stores old traffic information. However the GTM21 does seem to pick up a signal quicker, and in more remote places than the GTM12 ever did.

FYI I have the standard GTM21 reciever, not sure of the code off the top of my head.....either way, still believe that the 660 is better overall product....

It seems like the FM Transmitter is not present in the UK/Euro Unit

After much back and forth between UK/US Tech support, they have reported that the FM Board is missing from the Euro units (More likely it has been disabled by a hardware joint). They confirmed there is no plans to enable it and no way to enable it if using in a location where its legal

SO I have had to take my Euro 660 back to halfords for a refund.

Purchased a US one from Bestbuy at home in the US, brought it back here, put the euro maps on an SD card and it works no problem with the FM Transmitter. so it really looks at the moment if the FM transmitter is a must then you need the US version

I had more luck with TMC today!

This morning I travelled from Maidenhead to Milton Keynes - M4, M25, M1

All the way Led was yellow indicating not picking up TMC traffic data. Aerial was in vertical position.

At my destination I changed the aerial position to horizonal along the bottom of the windscreen - LED went green and TMC received :D

Travelled back to Maidenhead and had TMC most of the way down the M25, Lost signal there after from M1 juction all the way to Maidenhead.

There is a black label by the multipin plug that goes into the device.

Part no should be similar to 10R 023487 ( Thats what the GTM21's on the c550's use)

Hi just bought the 660 and so far so good. However, as said it doesnt appear to have the FM transmitter, which is one of the reasons i wanted it

doh..........

wicked piece of kit tho, 399 quid with built in traffic....

Yes to that also, i'm thinking of buying either the garmin Nuvi 610 or 660 before Christmas.

It would be nice to know:

1) Is the traffic info any better on the 610/660, as compared to the Nuvi 310/360, or even the TomTom units.

2) How is the map refresh time on the bigger screens of the 610/660.
There were reports on the Nuvi 310/360, that they do stutter at times.

3) Would people that have these new units rate them better than other units on the market? If not, what would you recommend?

All this information is good to know, when your about to part with £400 odd quid of your hard earned. Laughing

With regard to questions above

1: Traffic TMC. The reception on the 660 GTM21 in my case is a little worse than the GTM-12 on my 360, the antenna is a little shorter on the GTM21

At home I get Signal 11 on the GTM 12 on the 21 in same car same layout I get 9. the GTM21 loses signal on the M1 between Jnc27 & 28, the GTM12 does not.

As to the quality of information, same source so same info, just a little better presentation on the 660

2: Refresh rate is the same 1 per sec, there is some lag turning corners, and so far the 660 seems to lag a little more than the 360

3: Rate both the 360 and the 660 better than TomTom, and I have been a loyal tomtom user for years,

The addition of the built-in traffic info on the Nuvi 610/660 does appeal, but not my main reason for looking at this unit. I understand it's a on going niggle with most units, both with Garmin and TomTom, which offfer this feature. I dont know how easily the signal strength issue can be rectified?, is any one working on a fix?

My main concern was with the map refresh rate, obviously with the bigger screen i thought it might stutter a lot. Is the 1+ sec refresh rate really noticeable?, is this comparable to say the TomTom 5/7/910 units etc? (some say TomTom's are a lot more fluid).

Yes the TT is much more fluid and natural, as it uses 10 updates per second (Only 1 per second is GPS), the others are internally generated but it produces a much more fluid display

the Garmin 1 per second causes a noticle lag when taking corners & roundabouts, but overall I still prefer the Garmin, having used both, and Qing at the door to buy a TT910 the day they were released it seems strange but i am much more comfatable with the garmin now, and little toches like the 120mb world basemap that has worldwide main roads in areas not normally covered is a real bonus

I just found the New TTs buggy and the Garmin has been a lot more reliable so far, everytihng just worked with no fiddling,

Its like anything some will prefer one and others the opposite, (Good job basically or it would be a boring world).

All I can say is for me the Garmin Hit the spot, (and if you do a search on my old posts you will see how pro tomtom I have been!)
