Turning off "Snap to road"

Hi, I've just bought a Navman GPS, which uses SmartST. I, however do not wish to use it to navigate roads. The snap to road feature makes this absolutely impossible, as it will simply jump to the next road. Has anyone successfuly turned off this feature? Does anybody know how? It's SmartST version 3.50.0510 (2005).

I don't think it can be turned off; I've certainly not found such an option. I'm just curious as to why you have bought a road navigation application but don't want it for road navigation!

I have Memory Map for off-road stuff.

It was the only one I could get my hands on, Memory Map? Care to elaborate?

Sorry, I'm guessing by the version of your software that you have an iCN520. While there are ways to unlock this device and install other WinCE applications on it, buying the correct tool for the job really is the way to go. You can get Garmins which will do both road and offroad navigation, such as the Quest 2.

However, am I the only one that thinks that this "feature" without an option to turn off or on is incredibly stupid of the developers? I mean, it would be so easy to incorporate!

I couldn't find the GPS you mentioned, however I can get my hands on a Garmin GPSMAP 60CS, would these be better suited? It certainly seems more durable.

Much better, although it has been superseded by the 60CSx. It will allow point to point navigation and also accepts Garmin's Topo maps. The cheaper 60C/60Cx is a slightly lower spec version which has no electronic compass or barometric pressure readout.

Try www.gpsw.co.uk and search for Garmin 60.

I really do like the electronic compass, thanks for the help! Time to return this fragile, messy, thing.

Hold up a minute. I think you are beig unreasonable. You purchased a sports car when you wanted 4x4. It's not the fault of the Navman unit that it doesn't do what you wanted. You should really have done some homework, and purchased the right tool for the job to start with.
