I have raised this previously on this thread, but despite bumping my post nobody has responded, so I'm now trying raising it as a new post. Cheeky I know Wink , but I must admit I'm very surprised nobody on this forum has responded to this simple question. Here's my full query......

Whilst I agree the I3 is great when you know the full postcode, it doesn't seem to be so good if you DONT know the postcode. What I don't get is, if I try to enter a destination from just the street name, it very often can't find the street at all in its database, (or it offers me just certain ones of the same name in different towns but not the one I want). However, if I find out the full postcode for the same destination, then it will offer me the correct street and just ask me to select house number.

So how come, when the street I'm looking for clearly IS contained in its database, why is that same street ONLY offered in the results when I search via the postcode?

I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong? Is it really the case that you really must know your destination postcode in order to use i3 successfuly?

I've never had any luck NOT using the postcode. I get exactly the same frustrating scenario you do.

I have just tried some non-postcode searches for some really obscure streets and my i3 has no problems at all.

Are you sure you are doing it right?

My method goes like this:

Where to
Address
England
City (type first few letters of town or city name) select town/city from list
Enter house no. (enter number if known or "1")
Select street
Select address from list
Start navigating

Good luck.

Hope that helps.

I am of the opinion that the postcode database is not complete. Frequently a postcode search and house number gives a list that omits precisely the house required. When this happens I find that using the full country, town, number and street method is better.

For example a friend of mine lives at number 109. Using the postcode I am given 108 and 110. Not only these on the wrong side of the road, but due to a particular oddity about the street, 109 is about 150m further down the road from 108 and 110.

I've sometimes found that the street you're looking for isn't always in the city/town/village you expect it to be. Confused sometimes you have to use the town up the road, not necessarily the nearest.

I broadly agree with Spaceliner's method except for one point, if you do not know the house number enter "0".

This will sometimes offer up different options for the address.

Nick.

Find it in Google Maps, get the co-ordinates and make a POI for it. Then upload to your i3 and set it as the destination.

Hi guitareth,

I posted in your original thread to say that I was seeing the same problem with a couple of postcodes (SO53 4HZ = Renown Close in Eastleigh and SO14 5RP = Princes Street in Southampton). Anita replied saying she had no problem finding these streets.

The mistake (?) that I was making was in selecting 'Search All' at the 'City or Postal Code' screen, expecting that this would search all possible towns/cities. Explicitly specifying the town worked fine. I assume this is a bug in the i3 software?

Actually, slatermethuen, I'd never tried the 'Search All' option, having always input the city/town to narrow down the search, but have tried it since you said you were doing it that way, and found that works too!

If I select Where To, Address, England, Search All, and enter House No 0, Street RENO, it returns a list of 5 streets beginning with those letters, including Renown [ Avenue, Close....]. Selecting that returns a 'Select City' screen with a list of towns/cities, including Eastleigh, HANTS. Selecting that gives the address Renown Close, Eastleigh, HANTS SO53 4.

Inputting 'Princes' works in a similar way, including Southampton, HANTS in the list it returns.

So 'Search All' should work for you, too! Confused
