Now that it’s illegal in the UK to use mobile phone in the car while on the move (unless your hands-free) how long before they turn their attention to we Sat Nav. users. As the use of such GPS units become more commonplace will the police start to become more pro-active! Apart from the obvious rules to follow, is there anything within the new mobile phone rules that directly affects Sat Nav. users?

Anyone been pulled-over yet?

Basically us SatNav users should only touch the PDA when planning a route, when driving the voice navigation, or a quick glance at the screen should tell us where we are.

The mobile phone law has nothing in it that covers PDAs. Having said that though if you are driving "without due care and attention" then you can be knicked whatever you are doing. I vaguely remember someone being booked a few years ago for drinking from a bottle whilst stopped at traffic lights.

That said the actual wording of the new law is so loose that it will need to be tested in the courts. There are many interpretations of what it really means, including conflicting views from the enforcers.

Bottom line is drive safely and consideratly, remembering those in white transit vans have right of way wherever you are.

Its already been said before. Drive by the Highway Code and you will not pck up points. If you do get caught, and you opt to go to Court, the Police Officer will be required to produce some form of Evidence to support any offences disclosed. So if he/she is alone and isn't equiped with a camera, its their word againts yours. So if you haven't actually used a mobile 'phone in your hand, there will be no record of it transmitting..And as for the PDA/GPS or the factory fitted units, it will be very difficult to prove usage, unless you act in a manner likely to draw attention to yourself..

Hows that Dave...
