I am quite new to GPS and have a few queries on a potential purchase.... and apologies in advance for the long post!

A work colleague has had his 3600 series ipaq stolen, he has offered me his navman 3400 jacket, software and mounts etc.. The software on Navman is currently at release 1.91 and includes the UK and European maps.

I have not installed the jacket as yet as I am looking into buying the latest software for this, which according to the Navman site is Smart St 2005,

Can anyone please help advise:

Compatability with a 5450 series ipaq, my Ipaq has been upgraded to PPC2003.
What other memory requirements are there?, I have a 512 SD card for the ipaq and a 128Mb CF supplied with the navman.

Will the Smart ST2005 software support the 3400

Is it possible to get TomTom5 working on thie Ipaq using the navman jacket? my original plan was to go the TT5 route but if the navman works out cheaper, what the hell!

I would also be interested to find out how fast these units are, how long they have been around and whether the maps support speed cameras.

Many thanks and apologies for the long post.

Naz

The Navman jackets are getting a bit long in the tooth now. Does your friend's say Navman or Navman SE on it? The SE is a bit newer and has an external antenna socket. The jacket will work with your 5450 but you will find it hard to use the software; Navman don't make it easy to transfer licences and the software is already registered to your friend's 3600.

I know that NAvman didn't support the 39xx series when upgraded to WM2003; it's possible that they don't support the 54xx, either.

You can use the jacket with TTN5; I have done it myself. It takes a while to get a fix, though.

Navman software from V3 onwards supports speed camera import, but V2 and earlier don't. According to Navman's website, SmartST2005 will run with the sleeve, but you should call their Tech. Support to confirm this, and the WM2003 upgrade. They are on 01293 780500.

Must be the standard non SE version as there is no antenna ouput.
I loaded the SmartST software and managed to activate it OK, I did think that I would become a cropper at this stange but the install seemed to go OK.
I have managed to get a fix, but this was after around 10 minutes or so, and then everytime the unit is powered seems to take the same amount of time.

I have downloaded the driver as posted in the sticy above, will give this a try later on today to see if this reslolves some of the erratic behaviour, namely the unit just freezes and needs a soft reset.

Thanks for your advice

Naz

OK, the original sleeve was even slower than the SE version. It will work though, if you have the patience.

you might like to read through this thread or the sticky at the begining of this forum about using an anti static bag. http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3195
it seems to improve TTFF and number of Sats seen. I use the anti static bag on my SE version of the sleeve with great success.
