Does anybody know what would work with an IPAQ 1930, I would like to use Tomtom Navigator software, but dont know whether the bundle package would fit the Ipaq 1930. The Ipaq 1930 is quite a bit smaller than previous 39xx series and so i think that GPS receivers of the jacket type wouldn't fit.

Anybody else have any experience in this area ?

I believe the 1930 is exactly the same as the 1910. If it is, then the 1930 doesn't come with Bluetooth and also has issues because it doesn't have a standard serial port at the bottom (GPS is serial based), if that's the case the only real way you'll get GPS to work is to rig up an IR based system, which really wouldn't be ideal. If you don't have a 1930 at the moment, but are looking to get one, go for the 1940/1945. Failing that if you do have one, upgrade to th 194x range, or 22xx range.

Dave Thanks for your help.

The 1930 belongs to a friend of mine and was supplied by work so no choice was available.
I am sure that the cable supplied with it to connect to pc also fits my own 3950 as I remember when setting it up we connected my 3950 to test it.

Would any of the GPS units that connect to the Ipaq using a cable therefore work ?

Or do they all use the larger of the 2 connectors on the Ipaq 39xx series ?

Sadly no, the 1910/1930 do not have a serial port in hardware, although the sync port connector may be the same they cannot make use of external GPS devices.

There is however one user who has made an infra-red to serial converter that does work but it's not for the feint of heart! See http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=100&mode=&order=0&thold=0

adobbing, it's all down to the technicallities of the circuit board and ROM. The 1910/30 don't physically support a serial bus. They may have a USB cradle, and you may be able to plug a serial lead into this, or even a 3800 cable/plug into the bottom of the 1910/30 but it won't send data out of tihs socket in a serial format. Hence why HP skimped on the price and why so many are buying them up thinking they have a full Pocket PC with serial connectivity.

No GPS Receivers will connect to the 1910/30 because of this issue as they are all serial. The ones that aren't and which are USB, won't work either because the 1910/30 doesn't have USB host support on the Pocket PC. It's a no-win situation I'm afraid!

The infrared option is the only viable solution but like Darren says it's not fir the faint hearted and I doubt it would be 100% stable.

Darren / Dave

Thanks for your replies.

Seems like the 1930 is a bit of a dead duck as far as GPS is concerned.

Do you know if there are any plans to offer a CF sleeve for it to accept a CF card GPS or is there a method of adding bluetooth?

Unfortunately there are no plans for the 1930. AFAIK Bluetooth SD cards won't work as it doesn't support SDIO, so it really is a lame duck when GPS is concerned. You can't even connect a regular handheld GPS to it as this uses serial also.

The best bet reall is to sell it on ebay and pay a little extra for a 1940.

The HP site seems to suggest that the 1930 supports SDIO

They sneaked that one in, the 1910 main difficiency was the lack of SDIO for use in future SD GPS Receivers. So in theory a SD GPS could be used, the problem is that there wouldn't be any more storage slots available to store maps.

SO really it's still a no-win sitiuation.

But a SDIO slot would mean the use of one of those combined memory/bluetooth cards. Although a quick scan with google doesn't throw up one for the 1930. But maybe another could be adapted.
