Hi Dave and all,

I am going to purchase my first GPS which is so what a very exciting process. Choose what to have etc.

I think I have so what made up my mind, just wonder if anyone could kindly comment.

I think I am going to go for Navman 4100 bt receiver (as I like the battery bit. hate to know I need to buy a new one because of memory effect on battery in other models) and TomTom 2 software (as I like the 3D road map).

Dave I think you mentioned (a month ago or so) that both Navman 4100 and TomTom2 work okay together (i.e. no conflict). Do you still agree so, or anything new you have heard recently? Or if any member has any bad experience at all?

I know it is not going to be the cheapest combination (as I will miss out the bundle price), but I think it is a good combo. The best of both worlds? Anyone has different views?

Wish me luck with my new purchase.

I know I need to buy a HP2210 and a 128 (cf?) memory card and a car mount. Anything else? (I don't think I need to buy a cable to link the two, do I?)

I am actually wondering how does TomTom2 will recognise Navman 4100. In the PC world, we need to have driver for hardware so that the software can understand the hardware. Does the same not apply in the GPS world?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,

Rich

Navman 4100 and TTN2 will work well together. I tested them on iPAQ 2210's and it worked flawlessly.

If you can afford an extra £20 on top of what you're looking to pay for the 128mb card, then I would plump for a 256mb card, you won't regret it. Check out the SD cards at http://www.valueflash.co.uk/SD_card.htm

I have 2x512mb Integrals and I find these work extremely well in the 2210's.

You will need an in-car charger cable for the iPAQ (you won't get this, only a mains charger), so that's another £10-20 depending on where you buy it from.

Basically you don't need a driver. What happens like PC's, is that all devices that run off a Pocket PC are assigned a virtual COM port. Bluetooth on the 2210 is configured for COM 8. All you need to do in TTN2 or any other application is select the NMEA 0183v2 driver which receives NMEA streams from the GPS Receiver, and set the relevant baud rate that the GPS is on, usually 4800 baud and away you go, the COM port channel is open and you're receiving data. Pretty simple. It's the same process on the PC if you wanted to connect the BT GPS to the PC, but you may find that your BT dongle/card on a PC/laptop may be on a different COM port, but NMEA 4800 will still be the same. You could even use HyperTerminal to connect to the GPS, it's just a straight serial device.

Oh, and good luck! Thumbs Up

Thank you, Dave. Didn't expect your reply so late at night! Happy
Will keep you updated.

Is SD better than CF?

Oh, by the way, I thought, according to the Navman 4100, I thought a in car charger is included and a daisy chain (as it was described as) for pda. (from navcity website) Will it be of any good?

(I just read a few reviews on this forum regarding which shop to avoid. I wonder if I phone Navcity in advance, and check if the item is in stock before placing the order, I should be able to avoid the hassle, don't you think? I will probably buy the rest from spotlight gps. The good news is hp2210 price has dropped in highstreet. Now about 310 instead 370 GBP!)

P.S. thank you Dave and others for all these wonderful information you post in the list. It does help a lot!!!

Thank you,

Rich.

Oh Dave,

Integrals don't have 256MB. Any brand you recommend. (if it is good enough for you, it will do me!)

Thanks,
Rich

Dave and others,

Anyone knows who else sells Navman 4100? More I read the comments on this website about navcity, more concern I have. Does anyone know any other shop selling Navman 4100 please?

Regards,
Richard

You think that's late ? I've been found to be replying to posts as late as 1:30am Laughing

SD is slower than CF, but you won't notice much of a speed difference unless you're reading 50mb MP3 files from the same storage card at the same time as using TTN2, so SD is fine.

The Navman 4400 (and I suspect 4100) comes with a charger cable to power the GPS without batteries. Not sure what the power/amp rating is on this, it might be possible to use this to power the PDA, but that's not really what it's designed for as a lot of PDA's have difference sync connectors requiring specialist charger plugs. For the full review check http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/navman4400.php

Lots of people have had problems with NavCity, if you want to order from them I would go down there and pick up the gear. However, people have had problems returning gear that have developed faults, so it's entirely up to you.

If you shop around, you can get the 2210 for £290 plus p&p.

Integrals do have a 256mb, at ValueFlash it's the 3rd 256mb SD card (5yr guarantee) £61.59 inc vat.

Currently NavCity have an exclusive deal with Navman on the hardware only products, this will change within the next few weeks and other retailers will be stocking them.

Dave, thanks. I wish I could send someone to you to give you a few kisses.

Do you know how many weeks we are talking about? I can wait for another 3-4 weeks.

Globalpositioningsystems people and Simon the director, if you are reading this, please act quickly. My order is yours if you can get the Navman 4100, hp2210, tomtom 2 nav gb, 256mb in a good bundle (and throw in the mount and charger etc...)

Thank you Dave. Good night.

Rich

It really depends on how quick Navman get their act together. Hopefully not more than a couple of weeks, but that really could mean anything in Navman timescales.

I don't want to put you off 'cos I'm sure it will be a great bundle. However, I bought my bundle from spotlight and they bundle a CF card instead of an SD card, apart from being cheaper, many users that have reported BT connection problems have solved them by moving maps onto the faster CF cards.
I think the reasoning goes like this:- When the IPAQ is doing intensive memory calls eg recalculating a route when you have gone off course or wrong turn then the IPAQ doesn't service the BT connection frequently enough (it's too busy calling the SD card) so the Widcomm BT drivers drop the BT connection thinking the device has been disconnected.

Only a few have experienced this but I would hate to be one of the few.
I have never had this problem with my IPAQ & BT setup but then I am using CF cards I don't know if thats why or not.

Why not get a 128MB CF card for the full UK maps. And buy an SD card for all the other stuff you want to install?
