Are you making sure your antenna is parallel with the sky and directly under the windscreen so it has a clear view up without any obstructions.

Also, do you have a heated windscreen, automatic wiper sensor or anything else similar to this on your front windscreen? These things can affect the signal and you may need to move the unit to prevent probs.

The unit does take a few minutes to gather satalites when swithching on for first time or after reset, it sometimes drops the signal and picks up again but after a few minutes it should stay stable. Make sure you are not turning the battery switch off after each use. Only switch off at the power button. If you are not switching the battery off you should be getting signals quite quickly when powering on and they stay stable unless there are obstructions or antenna is not right as I said above.

Yes i have been doing exactly what it says in the manual, even when i am driving along the signal drops and the voice says signal too weak, please check antenna, you can not keep on doing this whilst driving.

I drive a citroen xsara picasso. (If this helps)

I have now purchased from ebay an external antenna, the signal strength now has magnified tremendously but surely i should not have had to do this?

No you shouldn't have had to buy an external, mine works perfectly fine. Unless you did have heated front screen, this would have affected your signal. Well at least it is sorted now.
