Just an idea... but for those of you that can remember the fun last Jan thru till whenever, as we all tried to get our hands on TTN2. What do you feel about TT offering an annual subscription service. That way any major upgrades requiring a CD release could be automatically sent, or even downloaded for a cheaper price.

Let me know, if there's interest I'll write direct to TT and suggest it.

When they did their business plan they must have considered that option as well. There will probably be a good reason for them not to do it...

Nevertheless, I would also prefer to pay slightly more but in return be able to download maps from an online server in the hope that the maps there are less outdated.

What happened to TomTom Maps Online, is that still around?

Hi Alix,
Basically it's been ok. The only points I have noticed is that because of the vertical windscreen in a truck my system tends to "see" less satelites than my wife's unit in her Citroen Despatch with it's sloping screen. The other thing is TTN's tendancy to use local short cuts which has led to some "interesting" roads being travelled Smile
On the whole I've been very pleased with it though. It certainly takes a lot of the effort out of getting around.
What I have been considering is an external reciever, (possibly using the BT on my PDA) to increase the reception, but we'll see about that in the new year.

Cheers

Personally I'd pay a little more to get at it via a download. I did speak to TomTom about this a couple of months ago, their decision was made a long time before this, but the info I got back was that the management had thought about this, but they felt that Broadband and highspeed net connections weren't out there for most of their users in most countries. Coupled with what would be high bandwidth costs for them (as opposed to small despatch/delivery costs) it would make the products a lot more expensive online.

The other fear that was expressed to me was that TomTom want to avoid a subscription based service, as they didn't believe that these types of services can survive.

However, not long after that TomTom did bring out holiday destination maps which were available online as a download, and I suspect this was a toe in the water to test bandwidth and user perception. I don't know how successful this has been so far, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

On the topic of bandwidth, it's pretty expensive right across Europe, but there are some really cheap bandwidth services coming from US based ISP's. Now that TomTom have a US presence (albeit small), this might be a good opportunity to host a large download service from the States. Thumbs Up
