Just upgraded the firmware on my phone at a Nokia Service Centre in the next town, 25 miles away. IT SHOULD COST YOU NOTHING TO DO. Takes about 1/2 hour.

Used TT5 to get me there and in true fashion we had the no GPS, lockup and resets.

Got the phone updated. Was a bit skeptical as I did the *#0000# and it looked like the old version but the guy in the shop assured me it had been done. Indeed, it was like a new phone in regards to settings/contacts etc.

As soon as I got it from the shop I started messing with it and could instantly tell it was more responsive. Damn, it's quick now.

So, stuck in the memory card, and switched on the Rikaline BT GPS. Fired up TT5, told me bluetooth wasn't switched on D'oh!. Switched it on and in a few seconds, the screen changed to full colour and it had found the GPS receiver. THIS WOULD TAKE ANYTHING UP TO 2 MINUTES BEFORE. It was nearly instantaneous.

Route planning was far quicker...no stutter on the voices. Went off route and it calculated again quite quickly.

Got a phone call and the phone handled the call properly and returned to TT5.

Switched off the GPS receiver, stopped TT5. Started up the GPS receiver, fired up TT5 and it had found it instantly.

On the acid test on the way home, it only lost the GPS signal once in a 40 minute journey but found it again within a couple of seconds. Not sure whether it was the phone or the GPS receiver actually losing contact with the satellites as it was just thrown on the passenger seat and returned a low count for most of the journey because of this.

Am I happy? Yup. Would I recommend people do it? DEFINITELY. Even if it doesn't help you, it makes the phone so much better to use.

Hi Conor,

What software version do you have when you eneter *#0000#?

Is the software you've upgraded to generic or does it feature any operator customisation?

Cheers

Still showing 2.0539.1.2 RM-84 and is branded for "3".

That's why I was skeptical but in use, it's obvious something has been changed.

Hunting around a bit, it appears that you have to wait until the network your phone is branded to release a version 3.xx and the Nokia Service Centre I went to obviously didn't feel or weren't allowed to just put a generic version 3.xx on. However, whatever they did update has fixed the problem so there may actually just be a firmware patch around specifically to update the bluetooth side of things.

Sadly I'm not into hacking mobile phones like I used to be (hacking as in legitimate/hobby - not cracking which is the illegal side) so am not up to speed on it.

I hear the firmware upgrade is available for free, I am just curious does it have to be done at a actual Nokia Service Centre or can it be dont by another service centre, i.e Carphone Warehouse??
