The review says that

The screen itself is typically bright and easy to read both indoors and in direct sunlight.

I have to admit that I don't find it that easy to read in direct sunlight. (Unless there is a setting on it that I haven't found! or there are some PDA with screens that are impossible to read and the 168 is in fact really good!).

The spec for the 168 says that it has a transreflective display - which I thought was supposed to be easier to read the brighter ambient light source - I guess that was just for monochrome displays

When you buy a personal GPS navigator you buy a bundle; and the bundle is only as good as the product of its parts.

Mine came bundled with a GPS software called "Mio Map" which is really a wrapper for an obsolete version of Destinator PN.

My hardware works fine in and out of the car; the software is buggy. Destinator admitted to me that version 3.064, which came bundled, has a major bug. The freely downloadable patch works only partially. For U$ 89.50 they promise you an upgrade that presumably works.

Apart from an annoying daily message that your map is old and needs replacement (no updates avilable!), the route planner is abysmal, both in shortest route and fastest trip mode. To get to the local airport it suggests a dog leg route that takes twice as long as the logical route. And, there is no way to change the Destinator route. When you drive the reasonable route the system wants you to do U-turns at each intersection.

The retailer was no help. They kept the unit in the shop for two months and returned it untouched. I was informed that: "We are a retailer. We only sell the stuff, we don't make it. Whether it works or not is not our business!"

Buyer beware.

Well I recently purchased the Mio 168 bundled with Mio Map 2 ( based on, and as far as I can see, exactly the same as Navigon 5) and its an excellent product.

regards

Max
