The point I was trying to make, is that contributing to the database shouldn't necessarily mean being exempt from paying for it. You're still receiving more information than you're providing.

Let's face it, the one's that you know about, you would slow down for anyway. It's the one's you're unfamiliar with that catch you out.

That's my view anyway, as a relative noob to all this POI gubbins. and a recent donator to PGSPW.

we're all still learning Smile

So if free seems a bit too much what would you suggest? perhaps a discount?

Can I just add my tuppence to the "It's my data, I submitted it argument" ?

Well yes, in effect that's right, but remember that, in return you're receiving data for parts of he country you haven't visited. Scameras in unfamiliar areas are the ones most likely to catch you out, so this data from other parts of the community is very valuable.

I'd be willing to pay a small fee for that.

Yes! supplied by other community members! I am happy to let my submissions be used free by others and it sounds that the majority would like to reciprocate.

The bottom line here is that the PGPSW company will do what they want and I believe thay are taking a very measured view to charging for the DB an not membership. I believe, in general, most people visiting sites like this would surf straight on if there was a charge.

Although I love this site and have been on here a few years it does not supply me with half the support I get/need from other technical sites FOC.

I actually can't remember the last time I went to a site for help that I was asked for paid membership. So, I will not pay for this site, download or membership and will look elsewhere to contribute and benefit from a free alternative, if necessary.

Aaaarg! That's the whole point!
It was an altruistic comunity thing. The whole is greater than the parts.
Socially minded people, doing it for the greater good.

Or did 13 years of Thatcher make that an evil thing....

I still believe that a restricted area for the most up-to date database accessible by members would work - a 3 or 6 month old version could be free to all.

That way if you want the latest (plus any other goodies/reviews etc) you have to join (and yes pay).

What do you think??

It wasn't meant to be helpful! Just telling it like it is. I am a grumpy geezer who takes umbridge at people wanting something for nothing. Sure, getting something for free is great & we all score on this at some point.

However, if one is not prepared to pay 20 quid a year to protect an almost invaluable asset (driving licence) then as I said one has the choice o off and cease whining. How did these people get the 200 or 300 quid for the sat nav in the first place! Maybe someone gave it to them for free - yeah right.

I know you started you own database that's why I am happy to pay you 2 quid a download. Even though I am irish I have figured out that 20 -50 quid a year is cheaper than starting my own database by a factor of about 500 - not to metion the zillions of hours around with it.

Whining is for girls - I repeat - go away!

Great idea :D

It would also give a free option for the DB.

What does everyone else think?

"Perhaps some of the more specialist content could be put in a members area?

Chris Whitwam "
.........................................................

When you say that 'specialist content' could be put in the members area that sounds rather a scarey place to me . . . not one I would dare enter!!! In the early days we would never have needed to go into a 'specialist area' of the web site as all we needed was good basic information on what kit was available at the time, and a forum to ask subsequent questions on. SO, maybe to have something as basic as up to date reviews in a members area? Have free access to read the forums but have to pay to read the reviews and then ask questions on the forums. Reviewed kit is something we all have an interest in, and apart from those who only visit the site to get to the database in question, I would expect most people would want to keep up to date with the latest kit.

Incidentally, was there ever a full review of the Tom Tom One? I gave up looking in the end :0/

all these arguments about

"I SUBMITTED THE DATA I WANT IT BACK - ITS MINE"

are from frankly what i believe to be childish nutters

anybody who is in the position of supplying information has done so of their own free will with no obligations by either party to compensate one another from the outset for that information or the accuracy of such information.

it was supplied freely and without condition, duress or caveats for the consumption of the recipient to either include or exclude it as one see's fit.

anyway, how can one claim ownership for such information that is clearly in the public domain.

its almost like if i saw london bridge before you did, but i told you where to find it and you later wrote a book about it and charged for that book, me coming after you for my information back as you have profited from what i told you

this argument is a total no-brainer by those claiming ownership for such information what clearly from the outset doesnt belong to them anyway

So AlanK (I presume your reply was directed to me). As you are a principled individual - may I ask what you give away for free? I am happy to take a long walk - away from the whiners!

As we are not getting any feedback for PGPSW mods the idea of a forum is to discuss openly without fear of people getting riled.

Why would an effective contribution be so of-putting, it does cost something to recompile each month and would my suggestion be so far off (an older copy for free but the latest copy for members).

Especially since the UK government has just announced a moratorium on new cameras!!

(pleeze excuse spellling)

Good point - I wouldn't envisage it being a soley technical area...... more of a place where specialsts are available to help and support members.

The website I was referring to earlier has this type of arrangement - the trained specialsts look after the members forum and spend some time on the free forum. It seems to work very well.

And no I havent seen a review of the ONE either - I've heard it's pretty good though.

You appear to be short of understanding.

1. 20 quid a year is not much at all, however it's a matter of principle not of price - the database has always been a free service and suddenly it's not going to be.

2. 200-300 quid = 149.99 for a Garmin i3, cheaper for some of the other options.

3. Starting your own database is not expensive, and not rocket science. The site should be earning money from other means - affiliation, promotion, advertising etc. It gets plenty of hits - this thread alone over 30,000.

4. To protect your driving license, drive within the law. Cost = nothing. Speed camera databases exist for those who choose to defend their illegal driving at above the speed limit, I know plenty of people with clean driving licenses who have no detection equipment - I wonder why that is.

Speeling Escxused Laughing

I agree this could work depending on how PGPSW intend to run it.

This looks like a good option.

Any other views?

I dont want to turn this into a tit for tat so am not going to directly respond.

This should be a discussion but being told to shut and and stop whinging doesn't fall into that category either does it.
