Is it City Navigator v.7? If so is v.8 due out anytime soon as I plan to use it in Irish Republic as well as U.K. (if i buy it) and v7 maps have limited Irish info.

Unless otherwise stated, I would presume that the Nüvi will come with v7 maps.

There are reports on this forum that Garmin will offer a free upgrade and the v8 release is imminent. Some of the i3s are shipping with the UK v8 maps already.

The Irish Republic coverage isn't great in v7 but the M, N and R roads are all there. Cities like Waterford and Galway are mapped but smaller ones like Carlow and Kilkenny aren't. Garmin have an online map viewer so you can check it out.

I don't know how much the coverage improves in v8, I think Navteq have been concentrating on completing Northern Ireland so they can claim 100% UK coverage (as opposed to 100% GB coverage).

Thanks Skippy. I'll try and confirm that free upgrade.

I e-mailed Garmin directly and this is their reply:

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

In regard to your email, the nüvi series are available in stores with Version 8 of City Select Europe NT.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Seems they already have v.8

I wonder if they meant City Select or City Navigator? Probably Navigator.

Looking at the Navteq Q4/2004 to Q2/2005 and there is very little difference in the Republic of Ireland coverage so I don't know if v8 will be much improvement over v7.

Could you please confirm whether the v8 was CitySelect Europe or CityNavigator Europe?

Thank you.

Thank you.
Is it possible that you could check the level of detail in Ireland.
As you are one of the first to use V8 it is of interest to many [on this and other forums] to see if road detail appears for the first time!

No problem. I'll have a look when I get home tonight and take a couple of screen grabs.

Is there anywhere in particular you would like me to look at?

Thank you for your offer of some screenshots.
I have sent you a Private Message with my email address

I have prepared two screenshots of Wicklow and Rosslare, using CitySelect Europe v7 on Mapsource on the PC, [40KB each] for you to see the poor level of road detail available to me!

If you could send me your email address [by Private Message] we can both compare the differences [if any] between v7 and v8.

Thank you for your interest.
