The AA are to launch the new AA Navigator 5040T Personal Navigation Device at the PocketGPSWorld.com Basingstoke GPS Event. This fully integrated system not only provides voice guidance to your navigation, but it also knows about traffic problems on your route. This is achieved using the TMC data which is available free for life through an inbuilt radio receiver.

This unit is priced at £579.99.

If you want to be one of the first to own one of these systems you can by entering our Basingstoke GPS Event prize draw. The AA have kindly donated a complete 5040T system for our draw in aid of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity.

AA Navigator 5040T specifications wrote:
A fully integrated navigation and traffic solution, which provides you with up-to-the-minute AA traffic information along your route and gives you the option to route around any traffic problems.

What does it do?
As well as incorporating our fully featured AA navigation software, the 5040T will receive traffic information via a radio receiver* built into the in-car power cable. You then have the option of automatically rerouting around any traffic incidents.

The traffic information you receive is free for as long as you have the unit, with no further fees or subscriptions.

* The radio receiver works completely independently from the car radio

one thing stands out from this story

£579.99 - this will certainly be an exclusive unit!

think they are a year behind most other in their pricing!

You would have thought they could have done better than a 128mb memory card at that price!! 8O

Well at £579 it is a comprable price to the £599 NavMan iCN550 which has a similar specification.

Doesn't the iCN550 have a 4gb hdd though??
With only a 128 card that doesn't leave much for use as a Pda or am I missing something ?

Yes, why do you think that? Unknown software coupled with Snooper's relatively poor database! A TomTom ONE withy our database is half the price and IMHO a better solution.

Why don't any of the manufacturers include size and wattage of their speakers in the specs? A lot of these units seem like they're hopelessly inaudible, but I haven't tried. Can anyone confirm or refute?

I've just reviewed the PDA upon which the AA offering is based, it's the Holuix GPSmile 60. A nice PocketPC running WM2003SE and with dedicated GPS Buttons and a built-in SiRFIII chipset.

It's speaker is typical of other PocketPC's in being too quiet for in-car audio though but it does have an excellent screen, good battery life, no external antenna to flip up etc thanks to SSIII and a decent cradle.

Given the PDA is a shade under £300 the £579 total bundle price seems fair given that includes the software and the additional FM TMC receiver.

I like the look of this unit with its built in tmc reciever.
Garmins 2720 is a unit I also like the look of, but it does mean having trailing wires from the tmc unit.
Main thing that would swing it for me, is whether or not it can support the the speed cameras?

AIUI the AA Solution does not have an internal TMC receiver, the unit is in fact external connecting I assume via the USB Port.
