Here is an item I came across recently, relating to problems experienced by PPC users, ie:- premature shutdown, even though the battery seemed to be fully charged! Some got a message telling them "the battery was flat, and to preserve any data -- battery to be recharged immediately".It also happened with new PDA's, shutting off after a few minutes for no logical reason. The article went on to say""it's an error with the PocketPC's battery calibration process, rendering the PDA almost unusable at times as it's incorrectly reading the battery status. To cure, follow this procedure:-

Fully charge your PPC, then while the PPC is STILL connected to the charging lead, press the SoftReset button, the PPC will go through the re-booting process. When the Main User Interface appears, leave it for ten to fifteen seconds BEFORE unplugging the charger lead while the PPC is STILL switched on. The calibration mechanism should now identify your battery as fully charged. We advise repeating this process after every charge you make.""

It can't do any harm and may explain away some of those mysterious shutdowns / data losses you hear about. It's not a problem likely to crop up when using GPS in the car (car battery), but if ever you have problems when doing a "dry run" indoors, you'll know what to do!

Just a query - was this mentioned in connection to any particular hardware?

Hi David,

It referred to PocketPC's in very general terms which I thought limited it's usefulness. I did give some consideration to the benefits(?) prior to posting. It's one of those "When all else fails, why not try this" type of hints.

Understood completely. I was just wondering if there was any insight into which hardware worked this way.

As you say, it seems worth a go if you're having problems. I can't see it being likely to do any harm.
