its called bluejacking its been around on mobiles for a while but this is new via laptops and ttg

What a load of bunkum! Apart from mobiles which will broadcast via Bluetooth is set to auto-discovery, laptops and Go's certainly won't if switched off or in the case of laptops left in hibernate or standby.

How many people leave laptops unattended in a car AND switched ON? Sounds more like scaremongering by uninformed journo's.

And this isn't blue jacking, that's where you use software to force a message onto another users device. Blue jacking is generally innocuous although were a lone female to receive a message it may possible cause some distress. Less common is hacking via BT to access services such as GPRS on another users handset.

AutoExpress had an item recently about satnav theft, their advice? Inform the manufacturer who will disable the unit remotely, , I give up!

This is a red herring.

There are very few people who leave a laptop on when not using it, battery life is already limited and to leave it on when your not using it is not a good idea.

Laptops hibernate when you close them when switched on and I'd expect thet BT would not be active then (I'll test this with my laptop tomorrow).

If you had a BT sniffer and were in a car park how would you determine the car with the bluetooth active device? Unless the sniffer has some sort of signal strength indication it would not be possible to guess the location.

I'm sure all TT owners are already switching their units off (battery life again) so no need to deavtivate BT and if they have any sense they are not leaving it in the car anyway.

Its a know thing that if you want to bag yourself a laptop, find a good vantage point over a car park.

Watch for some guy in a nice suit

Even if you don't see him put anything in the boot its worth breaking into the company BMW in the off chance there is something worth stealing.
