Twice now, after I have spent ages re-doing them they just aren't there.

Just started the other day, been alright up till then.

Any ideas?

Favorites has a habit of getting into a mess I am afraid. If Copilot is open and the PPC is re-set (soft) you can say goodbye to them. Also, the file (favorite.lst) in the /Copilot/Save directory on the SD card can get corrupted.

All I can suggest, is to keep a backup of this file on the SD card ready to copy back whenever the need arises.

Whenever CoPilot crashes or locks up, try to close it from the PPC's running programs screen, you then stand a chance of retaining the favorites.

I'll re-load them again and take a backup!

Thanks Neil.

How do I take a back up. What file am I looking for and where is it?

As Neil was saying just above, your favorites are stored in a text file in:
\Storage Card\COPILOT\SAVE\favorites.lst

Copy this file to a separate location on the PPC, and restore it to the original location if your favorites got lost.

To avoid the problem, try to exit gracefully from CP before doing any reset.

Also copy the favorites.lst file to your desktop for safekeeping, and feel free to browse it or make changes, via any simple text editor (an editor that preserves ascii text without adding any control charaters).

There is a separate favorites list generated by the desktop CP. Entries get in here from the Trip Planner whenever you select a Stop and press the "Add to Favorites" button to the right. This list of favorites can be included in a download to the SD card, if you didn't have favorites there already.

Add to the wishlist a feature to merge these two independent lists of favorites. At the moment it is annoying to have a large list of favorites on the PPC, but when you plan a trip on the desktop you find you have an empty list. Of course you can merge the files manually, but we shouldn't have to, that's what intelligent software is for.

Another wishlist item for Favorites: add the ability to delete a multiple selection of stale favorites on the PPC. Many junk items end up on this list (limited to 50 now I think). The current sw allows you to delete one at a time, with several taps and delays required for each. You can view and edit the PPC favorites list under Options, of course

I would also recommend keeping a copy of the favorites.lst on the PPC as well as the desktop, since (so far) the problems I have had has only ever resulted in a corrupted/blank favorites.lst so has simply been a matter of replacing it.

And as stated in sods law - you are usually away from your desktop when it happens.

Hi.
I have had this problem aswell. I think it is connected to not clearing out the GPS track files from your PPC. If I left it go for a long time between submitting GPS files from the desktop application, then like you my favourites disappeared overnight. Since then I clear them out regularly, and have had no more problems.

Good luck
Johan

I have noticed similar behaviour, but, while I think that what you say is definately relevant, I am not yet convinced that it is the only situation which causes this problem.

There are three known issues that I'm aware of that can wipe your favourites...

1) You run out of storage card space (or extremely low), and CoPilot tries to add a new address to favourites file but can't write the EOF marker

2) If you never properly exit CoPilot but just tap OK to put it into background task, then next time you soft reset the Pocket PC then you'll find that all your favourites haven't been written, as favourites are only committed when you properly EXIT CoPilot with TOOLS | EXIT.

3) If you perform a Data Download Wizard and check the Favourites tick box you can overwrite your Favourites on your Storage Card by accident (if you haven't manually copied them back to your PC before then).

Clearing GPS Tracks shouldn't wipe the favourites.

This could be the problem. I was recently experiencing program hangs and a sudden loss of favorites while driving. I find that my 256Meg SD card is showing as very full (232 used out of 240 'available').
The storage includes 7Meg worth of GPS tracks, which I will remove now.

This brings up another sore point: I often used to submit GPS tracks, but have not recently since the menu command "GPS, submit tracks.." has disappeared. I have heard no explanation, but I assume this very convenient feature is disabled by ALK when installed on WinXP, which I just upgraded to. Is it possible WinXP won't allow the generation of automatic email to send the files? I miss that feature, it is tedious to find, transfer, zip and mail the gpstracks manually.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't considered that. I see Dave reinforces the possibility with his item #1. The other items don't apply to me.

I think that the point being made was that having too many GPS tracks could be a problem, and that clearing them was the solution.
