Just re-read

... I would have edited it if I could but it should read...

1) I agree that a USB cable should be included in all packs for those that would use it with a PC. At the very least for flashing the firmware for those users that will not use it with a PC day in day out.

2) I would like to have seen an external antenna port to enable a permaintly placed receiver to be installed into the car... ie on the roof. While I relise this is not really needed I would ( along with others I am sure ) prefer to not have this excellent bit of kit on show... and yes you can take it out at night but what a pain if you lazy. ( PS Cant seen from the pics if I an wrong - If I am sorry Sad )

It does indeed have an external antenna socket

Another way of rating a new GPS unit would be a simple points system.

For example, plus 5 points if the unit has no flashing lights.
Plus 5 points for an on/off switch.
10 points if it gets a fix within 10 seconds, subtract one point for every further 10 seconds.
All aspects could be evaluated in this way

Let the readers tell you what is important to them.

And, as technology and requirements change, the point system can be amended as required, thereby eliminating the problem of 99.999%

When publishing the test results, give details - I can then decide that a flashing blue light is of no concern to me, but a sub-10 second fix is.

This system would also allow us a unbiased method of evaluation, and the vendors a chance to re-submit if something went wrong.

A Ranking system sounds great. I find it really hard to see which is the best GPS reciever from the current reviews. Confused

What I want is a unit that does Bluetooth, has a small LCD screen for stand alone operations, has datalogging takes Nokia camera batteries and can be wired to USB or to a PDA. Not seen one of those yet though. Wink If only the Fortuna GPSmart was being updated....... Confused

Did anyone compare the signal sensitivity and TTFF between SiRFStarIII and NUMERIX (16 channels) based GPSs? :D

One problem with these and some of the other newer SiRFIII devices is the USB charging port. This means that you cannot run a PDA and the GPS off the same charger (with dual iPAQ type cable). Is there any converter available which will convert a standard round iPAQ charger connector to the USB port?

Holux do a dual charger cable which will charge both the PDA and a bluetooth receiver with a mini USB socket. They also have a PS2 to mini USB cable. This cable is designed to be used with their GM-210/212/213 cable so it might not work with the Y cable you have.
Cheers.

Thanks, found them on their website. Good price for the Slim on there too.

AH, http://www.holux-uk.com/. I was looking at the http://www.holux.com.tw site and wondering what you meant. Wink

As the dual cable is designed for the GR230/GR231, do you know if it will it work with the 236? There is no picture of the cable to tell.

Yes it will work. The GR230/231/236 all have same mini-usb connector.
Apologies there is no image.
We will get that sorted shortly!

Ah great. Thanks for the fast response. On the cable page it says "Please specify which PDA you have in the comments area when you place your order".

Does the cable support dual mini USB mode? I.e. I am about to buy the O2 Exec (HTC Universal) Pocket PC which has a mini USB port. Will the cable supply power to both the PPC and the 236 and allow them to communicate over USB?

Any news on the wired GR213 review?

I've had mine for a couple of weeks & it's great compared to my Tom Tom BT receiver (old style) and my now dead Seidio GR300 wired receiver.

It is permanently wired in the car, behind the glove box under the dash board. It always has 2+ more satelite fixes than the Tom Tom BT one, despite being where it is.

It does seem to take a long time to get a first fix, but then sometimes it is very quick. It might be my Seidio G2100S car kit that is causing the problem, but I don't know how to test it.

I've now done approx. 1500 miles with it & am very happy overall. (approx. 28,500miles with the Tom Tom & seidio receivers.)

My only complaint with the GR-213 is the long TTFF. I have never managed to get a fix within the times Holux specify. A related issue, that I've mentioned in another posting, is that I lose fix when I start the engine. It can take several minutes before I reaquire a fix. This could be related to the cig outlet in my car (voltage momentarily drops a bit under 12 v when you start the engine) together with the voltage converter in the charging cable. It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has experienced this.

/Ulf

I've not noticed that problem when starting the car, but I have a brand new heavy duty battery in my BMW.

Are you using a DC converter from Holux, which you plug into you cig outlet? I suspect that it's my converter that causes the problem. An intelligent DC converter would contain a capacitor that keeps the output voltage constant for a few seconds even if the input drops. Then I wouldn't get this problem.

If you're using another DC converter than the one from Holux, I would be very interested to hear where you've purchased it.

Regards,

Ulf

PS: I'll see if I can test the equipment in another car to compare.

Uffe73,

I'm using a Seidio cradle hardwired to the car, which the Holux GR213 plugs into via a ps/2 -> RJ11 conector.

I do not use cigarete lighter sockets etc. The Seidio cradle powers the Holux via the RJ11 lead. much neater.
