I have a silver slider expansion jacket, with a 128mb Jessops cf card on an Ipaq 3660. The ipaq says its connected and the memory is there, but when I try to download the full map of Britain, the programme on the desk top says it cannot find the storage card, there is no problem syncing so I do not think it the connections.

Hope some one can help as I had bought for my Birthday against significant opposition!

mmm...weird. I've had something similar with my SD card and it turned out I had the wrong card inserted.

Are you able to explore the memory card from ActiveSync explore ? If not then try taking the memory card out and back in again - ive had this with my SD card as well and this fixed it.

Certainly trying to use the EXPLORE button in ActiveSync then double clicking on MY POCKET PC then STORAGE CARD and see if it's accessible there. If that doesn't work I would try ejecting the CF card then soft resetting the iPAQ and then re-inserting the CF card then connect via ActiveSync. It maybe that your Pocket PC is just caching the information, and ActiveSync is trying a direct connect and failing.

The other thing is it could be a compatibility issue with the CF card or the Silver Slider, or just lost clusters on the CF card which can be reclaimed using a program called Storage Tools from Softwinter.net.

I'm not sure what Error 31 is. You might need to check with SoftWinter who write Storage Tools. Have you tried formatting it on a PC ?

I'm not sure precisely what formatter Brenall is using, but it sounds very much like the CF card is either unreliable or dead. Flash memory cards can die - the memory cells don't last for ever.

I had a 64MB SmartMedia card used in my camera that had been powered down whilst being written to and needed reformatting. Somehow the reformat failed. Having tossed the card aside for a couple of weeks, I decided to try one more time to reformat it before throwing it away, and that time I succeeded! However, it did look very much like it was headed for the bin.

128 and 256MB CF cards are not that expensive now - maybe it's time for an upgrade to 256MB. Looking around, you should be able to get 256MB shipped for around 40 pounds. Though I've no experience of them, at least one of the Pocket GPS Staff rates Valueflash highly - and it's on their web site that I was looking.
