Being a complete newbie I would appreciate some advice on what I should look for in a mobile phone for sat nav? Any recommendations would also be highly appreciated. I'm currently with Orange and like the look of the SPV 550 but from previous posts it seems that this phone may be too new to be compatible with the sat nav software available. Is this likely to be addressed by the software providers?

Any advice much appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi,

You can use the C550 with TomTom Mobile, but this requires quite a lot of work - and requires you to mess about unlocking the device and playing about with the registry - so unless you know what you're doing I'd either wait for a patch from TomTom (probably not too far away) or buy a different phone.

Personally I would sway towards a Nokia phone running the Symbian Series 60 OS, nice phones with lots of features but still easy to use. Size wise they're not too much bigger than a standard phone. The only downside can be the sound quality from the speakers which aren't as powerful as the speakers on the SPV.

SPV's are good, and getting better, but still a bit of a pain to perform simple tasks imho.

Hope this helps.

I would have to agree with that, the nokia series 6 phones are nice, my phone is the Nokia 6630 and it runs TomTom very well, you can read the maps well, it;s clear and the sound is also clear and loud which is great when your driving,

The nokia 6230 isn't symbian, so TT wouldn't work with that.

Personally. if you can, I'd go for the 6680, it's more of a sensible shape IMO....

Yes I've read very good reviews for the 6680. Purely for sat nav purposes I'm wondering how it would compare with the Orange SPV 550 in terms or display, sound quality and ease of use?

Thanks guys for all your input.

6680 has to be the way to go for a S60 phone, can't get to grips with the 6630 plus it feels a little cheap....in my opinion.

I think you'll probably find that the sound is better from the SPV, based on previous experience - however I think the display on the 6680 and on S60 in general is better. Final point, unless HTC (who make the SPV) have seriously improved things on their production line it'll only be a matter of weeks before the paint starts to peel on the SPV and the keys get worn Twisted Evil
