First there was Google Maps and now there is Google Earth.
This superb application allows you to view satellite images of anywhere on our planet with some areas in amazing detail.

All you require is a broadband connection to make the most of this, it is free to download in its basic form but is also available in a Plus version which adds amongst other things GPS support (although you would still require a broadband link to access the maps! and a PRO version which adds data import and higher resolution prints. In all versions the feature list includes:

Fly from space to your home area.
Type in an address and zoom right in.
Search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels.
    Get driving directions.
Tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings.

Because it is still in Beta, access to the download is occasionally restricted but keep trying and you will get through!

Click here to visit the Google Earth homepage...

Downloads are disabled for now, but Google stuff doesn't usually have any Spyware (nearest it comes is Google toolbar, and that allows you to turn the tracking features off).

Does anyone know if Google Globe is based on Nasa WorldWind? The two sound awfully similair...

I managed to download a copy at 4pm yesterday and then they were disabled for a few hours. I checked just before posting the article and they were back on so it is worth checking regularly.

As for WorldWind, it is similar, less options and very much more detail in the satellite views, the technology was purchased from Keyhole so I suspect any similarities are just coincidence.

This is an update of Keyhole and is quite similar to WorldWind. I downloaded the Pro version on a 7-day trial yesterday, until the free version comes up again.

Have you gone to a US City, say New York, and clicked the Buildings layer?? Bloody hell! Amazing! The entire city in 3D including all buildings and everything. Very impressive indeed.

And go to any 'hilly' areas such as the Alps, lower your eye elevel and see the contours and fly through the valleys, very cool!

Hmmm, strange. The free download seems to be permanently unavailable "...it's a beta and we're working on adding new users...", but if you want to pay it would appear from the links I followed, you're straight in.

If it's not working yet Google, why brag about it?

It's probably down to different formats (i.e. deg/min/sec, or deg.fractions) or possibly down to the datum (i.e. WGS84).
