I am looking at starting Geocaching - this seems like the ideal solution for me.

Any Comments from anyone who has used Fugawi?

Adrian,

Hopefully will be getting my copy of Fugawi UK soon. I have an outing in Wales for the Bank Holiday weekend so it should get a good workout.

Thanks Mike I will look forward to your review. I live near Worcester and visit Wales quite a lot so you will be using the version of Fugawi I will be hopefully purchasing first.

My copy came today. Looks great on the PC but cannot get it to connect to my IPAQ as it times out and says in cannot connect.

Theres nothing much to configure as you just select either palm or pocket pc and thenselect install the software to the pocket pc. At which point I get a very small widow up saying connecting and then thats it!!

Very disappointing as its not much use to me till I get my IPaq working.

I hope I don't have your interface problem with mine when it arrives in a couple of days. Were you running activesync when you tried to connect?

I've had to uninstall activeSync 3.7 and downgrade to 3.5 otherwise it just timed out for me.

Now I've installed the software to my pda, and the gps works with the world map that gets installed by default, but I've not had any luck getting any other maps across. If I try to copy a whole map and then open it I get invalid file format. Or if I select to export map selection to PDA I just get a "out of system resources" message before it even tries to do anything with the pda. I'll have a little bit more playing tonight and let you know if I have any luck

None of this sounds very promising! I hope to goodness that this can be sorted out by somebody. Has anybody tried contacting Fugawi?

I've read somewhere that there is a maximum size to the map that can be exported to your PDA - 1600 sq km I think. Is this perhaps the problem?

FUGAWI UK and PDA problems

There have been a few reports of problems with PDA connections and FUGAWI UK. Here is the response from FUGAWI Technical support. Registered users of FUGAWI UK are entitled to direct technical support and should address their queries to [email protected].

1. FUGAWI UK cannot be installed on Pocket PC

SYMPTOM:

FUGAWI UK fails to install onto Pocket PC. Failure can result in the product ‘hanging’.

ISSUE:

It has been discovered that Microsoft has changed it's DLL file in ActiveSync 3.7.

RESOLUTION:

Check if you are running Microsoft ActiveSync v. 3.7. If so, you will need to perform the following workaround:

In your Win2000/System32 (or Windows/System32) folder, copy the "rapi.dll" file to the

Program Files/Common Files/Fugawi/Lib/ directory (which will replace the existing "rapi.dll" file). Now install the Pocket PC application files.

This workaround will no longer be required in the next release of FUGAWI UK.

FUGAWI will post a beta update to FUGAWI UK, over the next few days, which fixes this problem and a link to this upgrade will be placed on this site when ready.

2. Not able to copy an entire UKOS 1:50,000 map to the PDA

SYMPTOM:

A warning message is not appearing when the user tries to export a larger area than is permitted. In some instances, this can cause FUGAWI to hang.

ISSUE:

This is a restriction imposed by the Ordnance Survey License, and is not an inherent limitation of FUGAWI products. Due to the license restriction, FUGAWI UK ensures that a maximum of 1600 square kilometers can be uploaded to the PDA as a single file. One can upload multiple maps to the PDA, as long as no single file contains more than 1600 square kilometers.

RESOLUTION:

A warning message will be incorporated into the next release.

Also, refer to the file size issues below. Even without the OS license restriction, there are practical limits to the file size that can be transferred to any PDA.

3. General file size issues:

Users should note the limitations on the memory of their PDA as this may be causing ‘file transfer’ problems. Many Palms have a maximum of 8 MB of ram. This ram is consumed in part by the OS. Hence, a map of 8 MB or more will not transfer to the ram of the Palm. Palm users should restrict the size of maps accordingly. (We recommend files are no larger than 4 MB for use with 8 MB Palms.)

Palm 5 users can transfer maps to the Palm, and then move them to the memory card (if installed) in the FUGAWI Map | Open interface.

Map file sizes can be viewed in Forms |PDA Library.

Thanks for the reply, it's nice to see companies actively replying to forums like this. I managed to get mine working with version 3.5 of activesync, but i'll try getting it working with 3.7.

I also managed to get my maps across to the pda. My problem was an operator error! I was confusing the zoom pointer with the selection box pointer - hence the out of system resources error message as I guess it was trying to convert the whole map and not just my selection. Although the error message did confuse me!

The only other issue I seem to have is the transferring box does not always disappear when a map has finished copying across to the pda (and when looking up the maps on the pda before transfer) The transfer box stays on top of all the other windows until I close fungawi.

Other than that minor problem it seems to be working a treat now.

Thanks

Finally got mine sorted by copying the DLL. Now has anyone worked out how to get the elevation data loaded as the instructions in the help file do not make sense. The little plus + icon does not give any option to change the path.

If its like Fugawi 3 then the + should open a browse. You could always copy the data into the default folder. What sort of data is it? If DTED level 0 then you will be disappointed - the elevation data grid is too large (so no mountain detail)
