Hello

Can anyone advise?

I own a Palm M505 PDA and am considering either a Magellan Gps or a Navman 500 unit to attach to it? Does anyone have any views on either of them before I buy?

Many Thanks!

I haven't used either Paul, but another forum member did purchase the Navman GPS500 for his Palm m500 and I can share some of his thoughts...
  • Software is easy to load/install
  • The reproducibility on screen is surprisingly good even in grey scale, it must be even better with colour Palm’s.
  • Software usage on the Palm is easy – can move around maps by stroking the screen.
  • From the desktop you can only load one map at a time. (there are lots of maps!!)
  • The maps take up LOTS of memory (I have actually bought a 128Mb expansion card to enable me to get more maps on!!!)
  • Because of the large memory usage you need to know where you are going before you set off to load the correct map – this is the worst part of the software!! This is the single most frustrating thing about this software, being on the road and NOT having the correct map loaded.
  • Maps don’t appear to “stitch” – the nomenclature is very confusing i.e you have maps named Northampton & Northampton 2??? Birmingham Area & Birmingham (Birmingham Area) – you don’t know what is included unless you look at all the areas to be loaded with a particular map.
  • Sometimes the software is unable to plan what appears to be quite a simple route
  • The receiver is VERY power hungry.
  • The on-screen tracking is very good and can get you out of trouble very quickly.
  • There is not even a basic compass – this would have been very simple to include.

Unless you can get a Navman for next to nothing (so it does not hurt if you decide to give it up later) and want small size package, you are much better off getting a Magellan.
