So XDA2 with the latest Rom doesn't get its BT stack hijacked by TomTom.

I've got no information on XDAs - I don't own or use one. The comment to Lutz was just about the latest Broadcom 1.5.0 stack as used, for example, on the iPAQ hx4700.

Alix is an XDA2 user, so go by what he says on the XDA2. I believe the XDA2 uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack, which is an odd beast indeed about which I know very little. Most Pocket PCs, including the latest XDAs, use the Broadcom (nee Widcomm) Bluetooth stack.

Hi. I believe I am having the same problem with my TT 2004 software. The only thing is I am using a palm Tungsten C with a arkon powered gps mount and the TT software at times will not recognize the arkon gps till I do a soft reset on my palm. Will your "fix" that you discussed in the article work for my setup? *crosses fingers*

Thank you in advance

I had this problem for a long time, and found your website yesterday. However: the cabs were not available on the website. So i had to do something else: i had a version 3.07 on my pocket pc. I deleted according to your suggestion 3.07. Then i added 3.03. I don't know whether this is important. The i used a registry editor and substituted
"---BTCEIF.DLL" with "BTCEIF.DLL" (omitting the first three characters). I restarted the pocketpc, and i could use all my three gps programs (Tomtom, oceexplorer en crux).

Goodluck friends, and goodluck to tomtom, but without these irritating "features".

This is excellent! Exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks for that.

I actually left a couple of support messages to TomTom and after several attempts at answers (of the kind: "here's how to make a bluetooth connection"), they finally answered by saying that all you need to do is uncheck the box next to the type of GPS, in the GPS page of their driver. This would release the port, apparently...

I could not verify this as I already followed your advice of "single removal" of the driver, but my guess is that it doesn't solve the problem. However I need to be sure before replying to TomTom. (I don't want to get them "off the hook"). Did anyone try this out?

thanks...

Lutz

Thanks for the excellent guide.

I bought an iPAQ hx4700 with TomTom 3 Bluetooth, and after your warnings, I was expecting all sorts of problems when I installed Memory Map 2004.

But - it just worked. Straight away. No tweaking required.

I'm running Windows Mobile 2003SE, the GPS is v3.07, and the TomTom bluetooth GPS is on "Bluetooth Serial Port COM8".

What did I do right?

You did not install any GPS driver from 2.07 to 3.03. The GPS driver 3.07 seems to be only affecting part of the machines/BT stacks.

Great guide thanks..... this has caused me a great deal of frustration..... and I still havn't got it to work, but only because I can't seem to unzip the cab file properly..... Doah!!

Anyway, I thought you might like to see the response I got from TomTom Support on this matter....

Dear Mr Martin,

Unfortunately, we do not support the use of 3rd party hardware. You can try to use an NMEA driver with a lower speed, or the one called NMEA0183v2 Bluetooth, if they don't work, we recommend you contact the hardware manufacturer for more information. We can not guarantee that this will work at all.

We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

It was the line about not supporting 3rd party hardware that got me......I think it might be time to give up on TomTom and look for an alternative.....

David

Well, it sounds like TTN and MM will run on my 4700, for some reason, although not at the same time.

I will want to run them concurrently sometimes, so it sounds like the only way is GPSGate? Has ne1 tried two concurrent GPS apps on the 4700?

GPSGate (or similiar tools) is the only answer

Ah well. I thought it was too good to be true. Just upgraded to TomTom Navigator 5 - and now Memory Map can't see the GPS at all.

Any chance of a workaround, Lutz?

Thanks,

Ben

TTN5 seems not to usurp the COM port any more. Must be some remnants from previous installs.

Do you mean that this whole thing (Smarties Guide etc.) is no longer relevant or needed with TTN5, provided that you're doing a "clean" install, I mean not having used older versions of TTN on the PDA?

Is there a solution for Palm users (I have a T3) who are experiencing similar problems when trying to use software such as memory map and fugawi on a PDA with TomTom (5 now) installed?

Thanks,

W.
