Hi,

I've got an 3900 series IPAQ with Tomtom installed and a Garmin Etrex handheld GPS unit, they are connected using a Garmin to IPAQ cable I bought off Ebay (Supply Net I think).

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be working. The GPS Status software doesn't pick anything up.

I've set it up as being a Garmin GPS and connected via Serial to USB, but nothing happens.

Any idea where I am going wrong?

Many thanks

Mike

First of all make sure the Garmin is set to export the data as NMEA on 4800.

Then use TomTom driver NMEA 0183v2 and select Garmin or whatever shows to be on COM1. This should get a connection.

If it doesn't, then it could be a faulty cable, there have been other cases here in the forums of faulty cables from SupplyNet.

Check this thread.

I've seen this message and I got to thinking..

Can I connect my iPAQ 3600 to my Garmin EMap - if so how do I do this? Can I make a cable myself?

What software is good to use for road directions and speedcameras

Regards

Andrew, check out the following article http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/pcmobilecables.php

This helps better explain how to do this with PC-Mobile cables.

You'll notice from the article that the GEDC cable type covers the Garmin eMap, so all you need to do is match this up with the corresponding iPAQ 3600 cable and you're done! Basically you will need two parts to the cable, the iPAQ end and the Garmin end. You can also go for a powered iPAQ lead also where you need to look for the same iPAQ cable with a P on the end of it to denote power.

Dear Dave

Thank you so much for the link - this is what I was looking for.

BTW, what is the best software for UK road directions and speedcamera warning.

For speed camera support you would need to be looking at either TomTom Navigator 2 or ALK's CoPilot Live.

Dear David

Firstly, thank you for your advice in respect of linking a Garmin Emap to Ipaq. However, after looking at prices (Cable, software and holder) - I had a look for second hand equipment - and therefore I wonder if you could please give me a sanity check is £250 a good price for the following:

Dell Axim X5 300mhz Model WM2003 with the latest patch.
Tom Tom Navigator 2 UK maps.
RoyalTek Saphire Pro GPS mouse c/w cigarette charging leads for the GPS and also the PDA. 128mb Compact Flash Card.
Dashmount and Handnav clip and holder.
Pocket GPS camera database & Checkpoint software installed.

The seller purchased equipment in July 03 for about £500.

Anything I should watch out for as this will be my first entry into PDA GPS?

Regards

I have just made an etrex gps to PC data cable and now want to make another cable to link the gps to my ipaq 2210 for when I'm out and about and want to use ttn3 .Does anyone know which are the "data in" "data out "and "ground" pins in the ipaq connector plug (the one on the other end of the cable to the etrex) I don't require any form of external power to either device.
thanks
Dave

The following link contains information about the two different types of iPaq connector. It's in German, but the diagrams are very clear.
