I'd be really grateful for some advice, please.
I'm a keen walker, both fells and low-level, reasonably happy with my map-reading skills in good weather, but looking for a gps for a bit of reassurance in poor conditions. Mainly, I want to be able to check that I really am where I think I am!
Any recommendations? _________________ Noni |

Hi Noni,
If you intend to carry on using a paper map (which is a good idea as they don’t rely on batteries ) then a hand held GPS unit should be fine. It’s down to personal choice, but I prefer Garmin units.
When I wish to determine where I am in relation to an Ordnance Survey map in the UK, then I set my GPS unit (a Garmin 12XL) to Map Datum of “ORD SRVY GB” and Position Format of “British Grid”

Thanks for the advice, Privateer.
I do intend to stick to paper maps as I feel comfortable with them (until they blow away in a strong wind, of course, as once happened to me!), so your suggestion sounds good - as well as probably being the least expensive.
Cheers,
Noni
PS Onwards and upwards is usually my preference - unless assailed by the aforementioned strong wind! _________________ Noni |

Assuming we are agreed on a handheld GPS then the primary decision for you is whether to go for a mapping or non-mapping unit. If you just want to log tracks, waypoints etc then a non-mapping unit will be fine, topographical data is not available for the likes of Garmin etc here in the UK unlike ther US _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks for all that, folks.
Taking into account what you've all said,I think I'll be OK sticking to something cheap (well, cheapish!) and cheerful in the first instance. This will give me peace of mind over not getting lost, and seems to be enough for my needs.
If I want to upgrade in the future, I'll consult you all again.
Thanks again.
