hi

everybody who has tried PIE knows itīs problems, most of the pages just donīt work like they should. especially java-based services. well, i tried the following:

-installed vnc server on my home computer with adsl connection

-installed vnc client on my ipaq

now, vnc is a remote administration tool that displays the hostīs screen on client and uses clientīs mouse and keyboard to control the host. this way i could surf the web with my home connection and got everything to work on pda. plus you can use all the programs on your home computer, for example a mapping/route software to get adresses and coordinates.

screen update was ~10secs (gprs connection) for 1600x1200 full screen, and only the portion that changes gets updated. so when inputting text the delay was 1-2 secs.

very interesting, especially when 3g getīs launced. then it should work allmost in real time.

you can get vnc (gnu, open source) from realvnc

VNC is a good remote/host control system and it's one I use on a near hourly basis. It's encryption isn't the best around, but you can get around that by creating secure conduits with Secure Shell.

I'm interested though in what you say about GPS. I can't see how you could have a GPS Receiver say out and about on the Pocket PC, and then VNC in over GSM to your home PC and use PC based map routing software ? I cant' see how that would work because you're taking control of the PC, you're not merging resources.

I think there will be a lot more options available especially in vehicle tracking, personal tracking when 3G comes alive.

sorry, i didnīt mean that i use gps at the same time as VNC. what i mean is that i use my home computer to fetch information (coordinates of specific addresses etc.), then log off VNC and open gps application on pda and finally transform that information to say ozi explorer CE. sorry for my poor description.

That sounds good, and should work well like that. VNC is a great tool for using across multiple platforms. I tend to use it from Windows to Linux and vice versa a lot. The only problem I do find is that sometimes screen refreshes need to be forced or you do need to drag your cursor across the screen to refresh part of the screen. It's a great GNU open source product and not many people still know about it's existence which is a shame!
