Hey all,
I have a Laptop and a Compaq 3835 PPC,
Both have slots for a CF card (iPaq has a jacket) I wanted a solution that will allow me to run GPS on both the laptop and the iPaq and not require a car.
I thought the Navman GPS1000 would be perfect but Navman sent me this to my enquirey
------
No the GPS1000 will not function on a laptop, we will release a laptop
solution around August this year.
------
What would 'yall suggest for a Decent GPS system?
Thanks in advance
Mad Elk
Ahh and BTW something that works with autoroute would be ideal, unless there is some better software, sorry I'm a total 'newb' to the GPS market |

A stand alone GPS is perfect.
Take a look at one of the Garmin or Magellan models.
Do not get the cheapest one as these usually do not include a PC cable. Chose 2 to 3 above the basic models and these uaually include a PC cable. As a basic model plus PC cable works out to be about the same price as the next 2 or 3 better ones.
I suggest Garmin eTrex Venture or Magellan SporTrak. The Venture costs less than £140 and SporTrak slightly more.
You will then need to buy cable for your PPC, and of course, software.
You will get the best of 3 worlds, GPS with laptop, GPS with PPC, and GPS on its own (which you will get most fun out of).

What problem?
Are you worried that they are not compatible or not available?
Both are not problem.

Both Garmin and Magellan handhelds are very ripe and easily available in the UK. Check out GPSW. If you do still prefer the CF card route, then I'd suggest a Haicom 302 or Pretec Compact CF card, an dplug these CF based GPS Receivers into a CF to PCMCIA converter.
You will need different software as most of the Pocket PC software isn't available on the PC and vice versa. |
