I tried several which promised no PC sync but which then failed on the Garmin - eventually got one, but cannot remember supplier unfortunately

Of course you can update while out and about using wifi hot spot from your phone if your data cap allows
In practice for most this would not be practical because of speed and time

Late to the party, but I use my sat navs in the most part for traffic, so always want it displayed - I don't use for example Navigon any more because of that!
Full onscreen maps still shows clearly ... |

Route shaping basically does just that and is built in to the new Garmin Drives |
