why would putting the TTS7 voices on instead of TTS6 alleviate the problem significantly

Maybe TomTom does something similar to save power when the battery is low, and maybe they reduced the clock speed a bit too much to cope with peak system load under some circumstances.

I seemed to have stumbled on the circumstance that causes the stuttering problem (or at least makes it more likely to happen) on my 920T
(I'm running 8.301 and the Kate v7 voices at the moment).
